Congrats, Brown belt gets just as much respect as Black. IMHO. You may be there a long time but don't let it get to you; just enjoy the journey. I stayed brown belt for over 3 years.

Well done. I remember taking mine in Shukokai Karate. I haven't got a lot of time for that system now, but back in the day I lived for it!

You must have had some serious injuries or serious issues.

Not at all. I thought that the coveted "Black Belt" should really mean something. But, the more I saw in the so called "martial" arts, the more I saw people wearing black belts who couldn't knock their way out of a paper bag. The whole thing became something to avoid, an acheivement not worth having.

By-the-way, I've seen plenty of those McDojo Black belts that you are referring to. LOL

I didn't say that all Japanese Black Belts are crap at all. But the people surtrounding me where, as well as those I saw in other clubs.

Now there were some great fighters but, to a man, they all cross trained (and this is back in the early 80s). Privately they all agreed that they initially thought Karate would be the answer but, as they got into it, they then realised that it wasn't.

For example I trained with this guy

www.maxt.co.uk

He was all over most of us in Karate..... but felt the need to move on. He's a 4th Dan and I don't think he uses ANY of the Karate stuff at all.

I reckon that early Karate-Jutsu was an effective art. It was all about fingers in the eyes, ax hands in the throat and stomps on the knee etc. But it was massively diluted over the years. Those effective clubs are probably less than 1% of what is out there.

You are right about those McDojo Black belts though. I didn't realize that there were so many lame arse black belts until I started attending major seminars and tourneys within my association.
