Hey I am currently training in kickboxing but have considered to practise my striking skills on offdays from kickboxing. I*ve considered karate after watching some k1 and kyokushin. In these tournaments their punches looks a lot like boxings( fist starting from the shoulder and then being thrust forward) but when i look at kata alle the strikes starts with the hand at the hip. I's there a diffence between competetion punches and training punches

Punches are thrown from all different positions, not just the hips. In competition, not all punches are thrown from the shoulder either. A punch is a punch and a kick is a kick.

Ok...Kata are designed to do a couple things. 1) they are an "encyclopedia" of a variety of strikes, blocks, kicks, etc. 2) Any good school will then break the kata into applications, and these should be reality based. 3) Kata also develop coordination.
The stances serve to strengthen the students legs with deep stances, but as my Sensei says" You cant live there". When any one fights a real opponent, they tend to shorten up. What I mean is that there stances become higher, narrower then if they were doing kata. As you train more you'll find that all styles are very similiar to some degree, be it kickboxing, karate, mauy thai. They each just focus on a different aspect, or have slight variations to techniques that are very similiar. A good karate fighter can beat a good mauy thai fighter and vice versa. |
