NHK Sports is broadcasting the first day of the May Sumo tournament now. Good stuff!

Well, Ozeki Hakuho won his first match of the tournament. If he does well in this tournament he could be promoted to Yokozuna, so it will be interesting to see how he does over the next 14 days.

Ama just won by impressive armbar throw over the much bigger Tamoshima. Very exciting.

Hakuho wins over Kokai with good, straight-ahead Sumo (overhand arm throw) to give him a 2-0 record so far. Could he do it this tournament?

Chiotaikai wins over Tokitenku with a viscious barrage of thrusts.

Ozeki Kaio, pushed right up against the bales, pulls off a slick side move to his left and sends Kotoshogiku to the clay with a thrust-down win.

Toyoshima caught Ozeki Kotooshyu with a nice arm throw, but his right hand touched the clay before Kotooshyu's body landed, so he lost the match. Too bad, it would have been a big upset of a much smaller man (shortest in the pro ranks) over a much larger (tallest in the pro ranks).

Yokozuna Asashoryu throws a wicked left forearm right into the face/neck of Homashyo at the tachiai and then proceeds to push him right out of the dohyo. A violent shot for the win.

Asashoryu very quickly gets the corner on Kisonosato and shows him out of the dohyo to also remain 3-0.
