Same for me. Only brown belts and above were allowed to wear black uniforms. I always looked at it like the black was appropriate because it stood out to beginners and non-students. It was basically for instructors and junior instructors.

I think a black gi looks real cool. Though, I have only seen them in Hapkido. Every other martial art I have seen... The gi's are white. I will ask my master if I can wear a black dobok (yes, I am not doing a Japanese martal art. I am doing Taekwondo^^). But I doubt I would find one...

Every style has its own traditions.

In my old style of American Kenpo (LTKKA), black gis were for trusted students - people who were on track for becoming assistant instructors.

In BJJ you can wear whatever colour gi you want. Black gis are uncommon, although white and blue are the most popular.

In Bujinkan Ninpo Taijustu you wear a black gi from day one.
