I'm sure plenty of people who cross-train enter sports karate tournaments. I have. I'm not sure what your question is, though. If you're asking if we used jiu jitsu in the karate tournament, then no. Karate tournament are run under karate rules, so there'd be as much point me playing jiu jitsu in there as there would be in me playing tennis.

sorry. i guess my question is - do you find that people who train in other disciplines (JJ, TKD, etc) enter sport karate tournaments? if so, do they usually fare well? i know there is specific scoring, etc.

thanks

I know a lot of people who do multiple martial arts. My boyfriend's first black belt was in karate, but now he has it in Judo and is almost there in ju jitsu.

As far as the tournaments go - it will depend on all the same things that every other tournament depends on - technique, conditioning, etc.

I can't imagine training in other arts will help you very much if you haven't trained in Karate. Having competed before in other arts might - just because you already know how it feels to step up to the mats, etc.

Way back when I was doing Kenpo, people from our club would enter TKD, CMA (point fighting and san shou), and Sikaran open tourneys. It's a valuable exercise to compete against people in other systems, under different rule sets than what you are used to.

Traditional karate kumite rules can be a bit "strict" if you're not used to them. I was invited to train at a small Shito-Ryu club and was a bit surprised that I was denied a point when I slipped my opponent's punch and countered with a body shot - my body was not in perfect alignment.
