When competing size does matter, but not as much as strength.

Technique will however help to equal the odd when fighting a bigger opponent.

Also I should say that if you are a beginer you may get tossed around by bigger guy of the same belt, who use strength and size advantage. however as you progress you will learn technique that suit your size and you will eventually be able to beat larger less experience opponents. If you excel in your technique understanding you may also be able to beat larger guys in higher/comparable belt grades.

Judo was created in japan after the meji restoration to be a sport, and only a sport. It derives from samurai arts long ago but there is nothing similar between these old Budo arts and judo as it was intentionly made safer to be enjoyed. If your looking to join somthing that is botha sport and a self defence system, im afraid that doesnt exist........sorry. What does everyone eles think?

I understand what you are saying, but studying pressure tested styles such as BJJ, Judo, MT or mixed martial arts as a sport will also teach you good self defence techniques if required. I would suggest they give a better chance than learning a pure self defence style WHICH IS NOT PRESSURE TESTED.

Is this because without them the big guys would always win? Thank you in advance for your help.
Quit worrying about size. Go take Judo. It's fun.
