Forgive my ignorance, but what does "ussss" mean? And other noises like
"uuuu saa"? I trained w/ a guy who had a Shotokan background and he used to say "uss" when he bowed and make a lot of weird noises during demos. Heard the same kind of terminology when I watched a Vee Jitsu DVD. Just curious.

I think it started out as a way to make sure a person was both flexing their abdominals and breathing out while keeping a clenched jaw. Both are good ideas while hitting and potentially getting hit, so I imagine that was the original intent. It doesn't stop me from half-peeing myself when I hear people making kung-fu movie noises during a sparring match or a fight, though. These days, I think some folks (I believe they are referred to in the industry as "douchebags") believe such noises are cool.
But I could be wrong. |

I couldn't agree more. One time this guy said "usss" or something like it and my instructor said, "What did you fart or something?".
Looks/sounds like a bunch of showy bullshit to me.

the term "Oss" is an acknowledgement used in when bowing in alot of japanese styles like shito ryu, and its off shoots (shitokai, shukokai, etc).
the "kiai" is used to focus energy into a strike and also helps breathing in new students. |

Are you attempting to be humorous?
Are jokes like this the reason your students walk out on you at your School in the Castro district? Or is it the fact that you are an evil right wing republican, and none of your students want to hear about Monica Lewinsky's stained dress for the 746th time, when the class was supposed to be about Ancient imperial China? |

They used Uss at my shotokan Dojo also. It's a basic custom and greeting. It scares the shit out of newbies and whitebelts. LOL

This Link will explain the proper usage of Osu, which I assume is what you are referring to. Train Hard, Stay Safe, Good Luck

Many Male Japanese office workers greet each other with "oss", which is both a contraction of oyaho gozaimasu and designed to make them look tough in the eyes of their peers. Business is war, and they're not lemmings, they're corporate warriors, don'tcha know...?

I tried to imagine a Japanese person learning boxing, and being told to shout the english words "FIGHTING ENERGY" when he punches, to increase the power of his punch. Pretty damned funny.

Why would someone fear a word - hell, not even a word, a phonetic utterance?
