It's a very simple armlock but it will destroy the joints if you're not careful with it, eh?

Give your friends time to tap out and don't torque it too much.

Think what else you might try with his arm isolated like that?

Could you release his head and udegarami his other arm at the same time?

Hmmm?

Maybe you just want to punch his face in? Lock out the arm and go to it!

i use this technique. however, holding the guys head and arm like that can end up with the guy slipping out the back and taking your back if you are not careful.

I like to do that armlock with the other leg. I usually try for an Americana, then when they straighten their arm to defend it, they put themselves into that armlock.

Well, nice to know SOMEbody is reading the topic. Thanks kindly DH.

I think it's safe to say you could take this stuff straight to your BJJ academy and "test" it on your fellow students but sadly the MMA/BJJ folks shy away from the "Japanese Arts" board. Too bad. I keep hoping to start a thread that will just shoot to 300 posts in a week but that's a pipe dream.

I think if the same techniques were presented up there it would get more attention?

Shoulder locks are illegal in Judo and BJJ players will think the shoulder lock(s) is (are) an elbow lock. Any bets?

i think this technique is actually pretty well known nowadas in bjj and mma circles. ive been put in it a few times. i also do an elbow attack from the head and arm position but instead of hooking his arm with my leg and attacking his shoulder, i just grab his wrist and straighten his arm over my thigh and then raise my thigh to attack his elbow joint if you know what i mean.

thats easy, just make a thread about your favorite jacket or your new haircut, or even maybe the leather gimp mask you want to use for a martial arts headgear........ topics like those seem to be some of the hottest on this forum, they are sure to get you hundreds of clicks, sometimes thousands.

in fact just to test it out, i created my own thread about my snoopy shirt and my hip hop shirt and it got over 800 clicks.

This is a gorgeous move that I use on almost a daily basis.

I tend to start with the ude garami with my legs, and then if they pull out I switch to the straight armbar. If they turn their arm down to avoid either (putting their arm in a "kimura" position) I trap the leg, then bring my leg over their head and reverse triangle their body, then you can straight armlock the other arm, kimura the other arm for north south, switch from the kimura to an armbar, or simply hit them.

Recently a guy at BJJ got smart and thought he would just wrap his arms around my torso so I couldnt put his arm between my legs. So I pinned him, but in the painful way that they like to teach you at judo. So after a bunch of straining on his part, he let go, at which point I promptly submitted him with the ude garami with the legs.


As for the head control and the possibility of them taking their back, you can defeat this three ways. Learn how to pin them properly, with good control it wont often come up. You can also forget wrapping the head, and take a far side underhook, this effectively kills their taking the back escape, but in my experience lessons your chance of getting a submission. The last way, and most sneaky way, is before you set up kesa-gatame, take their gi out from under their belt and feed it under what is going to be the far side arm. Transition to kesa-gatame wrap his head like normal, but now you can hold his gi with the hand your wrapping his head up with. The gi acts as an underhook. Best of both worlds.

Straight armlock is called ude gatame and the arm pit armlock is called waki gatame. I only said this because you used the term ude garami so I figured I'd help you out.

lol my japanese isnt that good...

Juji-gatame and ude-garami is what I use just as ... armlock or shoulderlock.

I'm more of a BJJ guy than a judo guy (and I like throwing people more can you believe it?).

So when I say stuff like Ude-Garami with the legs, I hope people get the general idea, I suppose I could look everything up in my syllabus though but thats time consuming.

Okay, cause I said I can go on and Tant wnats me too I will.

as I mentioned before, when you underhook the far side I find I am less likely to get a submission then if I wrap the head. The way I look at it is if I have the head wrapped I can focus on control and the near side arm. With the underhook you have to attack both arms for success while maintaining control.

The key here, which helps with both control and submissions is to lower your head, so that your forehead is almost touching their chin. and you want your head on the side of their head closest to the far side underhook (sorta bad description. You want your head between the underhook and their head.

This greatly limits their escapes and sets up the submissions. Because you have the underhook they cant escape out and take your back. Your controlling the near side arm, and have afirm base so it will be difficult for them to roll you, especially as they will have difficulty using their far side arm (that you've underhooked) to assist in the roll.

Their last escape is to push on your face and create space that way. Heres where the head comes in. When they push on your head to create space you simply have to resist with your head, which is rather easy because when your head is that close their arm gets stuck in a cramped position with very little power. This is when your arm, that is controlling their near side arm, comes across and smashes the wrist to the mat. You've already got the underhook so then you transition to the standard Ude-Garami (its right in this situation too lol). and then finish from there.
