Lyoto Machida & Karate Hi guys, i have some questions and i wanted to know what are your opinion, especially from Matt Thornton. I do not have any experience with Karate and i do know that Lyoto cross train in sumo and jiu jitsu for his clinch and ground but since he claim his stand up is karate, i was wondering that is it possible that karate and other types of martial arts such as kung fu, silat, hapkido could be use in an MMA environment or is he a one off? I was also wondering if what he does is truly karate?
Just off the top of my head, Chuck Liddell (Kempo, Koei Kan), GSP (Kyokushin), and Bas Rutten (Kyokushin) all have karate in their backgrounds.
Can they point to something in their individual styles that is truly karate? Yes. Is it "pure" 100% unadulterated karate? No. No-one in MMA does a "pure" style.

So, lyoto machida is really just an mma fighter and not a karate fighter?
