Default Out of the ordinary test

Has anyone ever had to do some form of out of the ordinary test as a part of your martial arts training?

I have heard of people who had to work the doors as a bouncer for an x-amount of nights, so they can get some real world experience before getting their black belt.

In one class I was in we had to be able to run an obstacle course.

1) We ran a 100yrd sprint
2) Weave through cabbage cans
3) Jump a 6 foot fence
This was timed.

Then immediately (with out rest) we had to engage in 3, 3minute rounds of full contact fighting against a fresh fighter each round with only 1 minute rest in-between.

I loved it!

yeah....ive did some wierd tests..self thought and for my sensei...
a) stood in a river and try to work on grabbing fish
b) tied 2 x 1ft. boards to my arms did strength training in pool underwater.
dont know if qualifies for a test but it wasnt ordinary training
c) (had to beat a certain time)---had to run up one hill and collect wood bring it down the hill chopp it and then had to run that back up the hill to pile.

this kind of trianing is fun every once in a while...

Default tkd to jkd

this sounds like the real deal approach to what advancement is all about.
instead of advancing in belt rank only by having to do poomsee, they should have at least the more physically capable individuals demonstrate they're technique abilities and also do strenuous physical competence based tests as
was mentioned at the beginning of this thread.the sparring, the sprints, and the obstacle courses sound like real world type testing with a reality based approach in mind.

-i quit organized martial arts because of the hassel and disinterest in progression of rank through memorization of dumb stupid pointless vexing poomsee form requirements.you dont fight with poomsee.i would'nt even use it to demonstrate to a casual onlooker.i'd rather demonstrate jumping spinning techniques, and high side kicks.much more worthy proving ground of your competence i think.

-is jkd different in that it perhaps allows advancement through more realistically inclined means of proving your worth?

This is a test I designed for a SD class for Intermediate students.

Self-defense techniques- The examinee will perform defenses to 3 unknown attacks. The attacker will execute the attacks aggressively and will not cooperate with the defenses in any way. At least one of the 3 attacks will be with a weapon.

Rules:
1) The defender will not know what techniques the attacker will employ.
2) The attack and defenses will be performed at full speed.
3) Protective equipment will be worn.
4) The defender can ground the attacker but must not go to the ground him/herself.
5) Each defense will allow 30 seconds to conclusion.

Perform take downs- Perform any 3 takedowns (at least 1 must be a throw) against an attacker trying to take you down and who will not cooperate with your attempts at taking he/she down.

Rules:
1) Wrestling ear protection will be worn.
2) Each take down will be against a different attacker.
3) The defender will be given a 2 minute time limit to take the attacker down.
4) The defender must not go to the ground with the attacker- He/she has 3 seconds to regain their feet.

Top position- The defender will have to fight in the top position. He/she will try to get the bottom wrestler to tap out by submission or maintain control.

Rules:
1) 1, 3minute round.
2) Top (defender) will submit the bottom (attacker).
3) Top (defender) will not allow the bottom (attacker) to escape or gain a reversal.
4) Wrestling ear protection will be worn.

Bottom position- The defender will begin in the guard or bottom position (Stomach). He will gain an escape, reversal, control, or submission.

Rules:
1) 1,3minute round.
2) Must escape; gain a reversal, or submission.
3) Wrestling ear protection will be worn.

Free sparring- The defender will free spar. The examinee will be expected to show Poise, smooth flowing techniques, rhythm, and the ability to take advantage of openings on a consistent basis. Ground fighting will be allowed.

Rules:
1) 1, 3minute round.
2) Light contact to face, no kicks to head but full speed contact elsewhere.
3) The examinee may use takedowns, throws, and trips. He/she may also fight on the ground.
4) During free sparring- no strikes to knees, spine, back of head, kidneys, groin, or eyes.
5) Protective equipment will be worn.

This may not be unusual but deffenately different from standard tests. I try not to interfere with the student devleoping his own style of fighting or his stategies/tactics.
