Just curious...what do you all consider your most important piece of personal training equipment (ie heavy bag, grappling dummy, wooden dummy, etc) and why?

Everywhere I go, I carry two pairs of gloves and two Macho headgear with face cage.
If I know that I am going to train in specific, I also bring two fencing mask, a pair of hockey gloves and two sticks. Yella-What do you train in?

The weapon arts imply the they can stop the unarmed man. A complete martial art implies any fight can go anywhere...be ready and able to go everywhere. |

I agree that a partner is absolutely the best thing, but as far as equip goes, i think maybe thai pads. you can use them for focus mitts to punch and elbow, pads to knee and elbow and with a decent feeder can be used interactively on the ground or standing. you can attack with them on and defend with them on. you can use them to practice full contact stick work (again with decent feeder), can be tied to a post and used as a Makiwara, can be used as a medicine ball, used as a shield in stick and shield sparring, you can headbutt, elbow and knee them.
I realize that this means you have a partner, without a partner, it will depend on what you want to work on, what area we want to focus on. trapping and destructions, wooden dummy, but also use a rope or belt, ground work - heavy bag, grappling dummy, thai pad (without a partner) striking - everything from bags and pads to boards to couch pillows, you name it and some culture somewhere has used it to strike. anyway, i think thai pads with a partner and without you must isolate the desired area of training and then decide what equip is best. harley |

Outside of a training partner and if you have to pick one (which I think is the essence of the question) then I say heavy bag. If you work it right, it trains all of your tools and develops so many attributes: power, body mechanics, conditioning, footwork, timing, distance etc. In a field where training partners can often let you down, the heavy bag is always there.
Unless she runs off with the wooden dummy, bitch. I still miss her, so if you see her with that three-armed son of a bitch you give me a call. |

i think the OP means actual equipment that you can buy or make. would have to be pads by a long shot, providing this includes a well trained padman and not someone that doesnt know how to be a padman.

As far as actual equipment goes, if I had to pick one thing, I'd say the heavy bag. If I could pick two things, I'd say heavy bag and dumbells.
