DJColdfusion has a spectacular aura aboutDJColdfusion has a spectacular aura about
Default JKDC and Kali

Many JKD practicioners untegrate principles or concepts from Kali into their selfdefense curriculum. I really got into memorizing Kali drills and working all the numbering systems that I could find . . . but how many angles do you really need for general weapons based self-defense?

Most attackers use an angle 1 or overhead caveman smash type of a movement or they employ an angle 5 stabbing type of motion. (I'm using Inosanto/Lacosta numbering click here for a better description).

All of the other angles seem to be variations, to one degree or another, of the first five angles.

Do we really need to teach the others or can we "chunk" the techniques and angles already present and rely on the principles and conepts that support both Kali and JKDC to tie the elements together?

Will removing the "extra" angles increase reaction time of the student due to the fact that they won't be trying to figure out the exact angle of an attack as they respond to an attack coming from an "area" instead of an exact angle. Or is it unrealistic to try and focus on generalizing to the level I am discussing here?

(In case you were wondering, I am more concerned with the teaching self-defense with JKDC as a tactical guiding core knowledge system than I am concerned with teaching Kali . . . and that is why I didn't post this in the FMA forum)

Thanks

DJC
