Fist Straight Blast

Anyone think that this is useful?
What ive learned is that it helps a lot from bein tackled and from going into the clinch so u dont go on the floor. But my sifu has told me some people think that it isnt to useful, whut do u think?

I think it's great. Once you get an opponent going backwards, keep him there. I first learned it in wing chun chain punching, then strait blast, and now more recently as Burton Richardson's Boxing blast. Ultimately the question is, does it work for you? Give it an honest try, it really helped my arsenal, but if you don't have the same success, disregard it in favor of another technique you like better

one great way to find out is have someone try those things on you, while you attempt the straight blast. have him come at you ar full speed, and see if it slows, hinders, or even stops him. if it does, then you can expect something similar with somewhat larger people. it if hinders him, you can expect for it to work a lil better on smaller people. try it as he tries to grapple you. if you are successful against him, try it against someone else at full speed, and find out for yourself

It's a fast series of straight punches coming from the inside of the body. usually the elbows are tucked in to make the punches harder to see coming. it's not a punch that is used for power, but is exceptionally fast, and can be used to temporarily "blind" an opponent and leave him open for a stronger or more powerful attack. When Sifu Bruce used it, he would continue it untill the person put their hands up, then come in with a muay thai shin kick to the ribs or kick to the groin to get their hands down, then continue with the straight blast. it's a very "smart" technique

Once you got the correct technique for it, then the straight blast is very effective.

The only problem I have found with it, is that its better to use it in the middle of the ring, if I use it when their next to the ropes, then sometimes they can get a front kick in when their back is up against the ropes. But that means I just need to work on the speed of it.

Just a little advise, if you are in a situation in which you know you are going to need to fight back, start with it right away. it's not something people expect. and if you can get 2 or even 1 good straight blast punch in, it may be all you need. then he starts staggering, and throwing his hands up, which basically means he is begging to be grappled with or kicked in the groin, or ribs. you've got to take advantage of the situation, and the straight blast is one of those techniques that just makes it that much easier

I use and teach it. I think it is an extremly good tool to have in the tool box. It can go places a Jab can't because of being turned with the thumb to the sky.

I prefer the shuffle for the following reasons:

1) easier to maintain the propper distance for the blast
2) easier to employ follow techniques since your basic position isn't violated
3) easier to disengage the blast if something goes wrong

The shuffling step seems to be more efficient, less limiting tactically and easier to control than running or walking.

Default Strait blast in action

A great example of effective strait blast was the UFC fight between Vitor Belfort and Marvin Eastman. I can't remember which event it was in, but Vitor used what looked like strait (boxing) blast to back Eastman up and set up one of the most vicious knee strikes I've ever seen to end the fight. For anyone who hasn't seen it, it's worth checking out. I'm not sure if Belfort's ever trained in the specific technique of strait blast, but he's a member of the Brazillian olympic boxing team.
