In "JKD: the Art and Philosophy of Bruce Lee" Inosanto writes that he and Bruce Lee changed the name of their method from Jun Fan to Jeet Kune Do around 1968. Personally I believe that jkd is a concept and not a "style" per se, but I don't understand why the core style is now called Jun Fan. Is that merely a way that Inosanto uses to clarify which material was specifically Lee's? Why was this name for Lee's "style" (jun fan) retained? In his last days did Lee really care what his school's curriculum was called?

I'm far from any kind of authority on this ... but this is my take on the subject.

Jun Fan is the modified version of Wing Chun that Bruce Lee developed. Jun Fan is a structured progression ... a system which can be taught. JKD is a personal expression and will differ from person to person ... therefore it cannot be taught. Jun Fan is a guide. It's a method of finding one's personal expression. It's a vehicle to get to JKD.

Again, just my take.

Jun Fan is Bruce Lee's "Chinese name"... and I believe that the popular use of the term Jun Fan as martial art has come to be associated with the art as Bruce practiced it while he was alive. Some instructors prefer to adhere solely to the Jun Fan art, while others in the JKD Concepts crowd still use it as their base art.

Hope that helps a little....

Very true. Bruce Lee called what he taught "Lee Jun Fan Gung Fu" prior to adopting the name "Jeet Kune Do."

Thanks for all of the feedback!

I asked one of my instructors, and he told me that for a short time jkd was practiced as a system (the name Jun Fan was temporarily scrapped), but later Lee renamed the system Jun Fan and jkd became the name of the concept and principles. This would account for so much of the confusion.

Default before Jun Fan Gung Fu

All you guys seemed to have nailed the difference of Jun Fan and JKD right on the head but actually before Lee Jun Fan Gung Fu Sijo Bruce taught "Tao of Chinese Gung Fu" (1959-1962) that consisted primarily of Wing Chun and Fencing. Sijo made three instructors in this art, Dan Inosanto, Taky Kimura and James Lee.

Ever heard of "honouring a name" guys and gals ????

Thats all it is, a "name", nothing more, nothing less!

Jun Fan (yes one of his given names) has been quoted a many many times on saying somethign like...
"Maybe I chose the name to soon..."
and
"It is just that, a name, don't fuss over it or its meaning will be lost..."
again probably not exact but Im Dion, he is Bruce... we are different in everyway yet in no way... get it ?

There is also something else to note about what name was given, after reading a few autobiographies of Jun Fan from different peoples perspective. At some time, at some place of which I am not 100% certain there was either a meeting or some common agreement met, by those who knew bruce best, including Linda I do believe, that the "name" 'Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do...' be "branded" upon his teachings as something in which people may remember him for HIS style and in hope that they to one day find their way to the path toward freedom.

Honour, respect, etc

They hold true to everything, anything and nothing!

That also means for YOURSELF!

**Why hold onto a name that has been twisted around so many perceptions that it has become unaware of its whole reason for being ?**

***Another view on things or not ?***
