This is a question that needs to be answered because I would like to be as strong as Bruce and still be so small.

I got a reply on a bodybuilding forum... hope this helps you too.

"You basically need a vary low Body Fat % and you need to do lots of different workouts so you work all the little stabilizing muscles. You could use the “thero band” (big rubber tubing) lots of med ball workouts. You can also do workouts with the big gym Balls that girls use all the time in like the step classes. If you do dumbbell press when you are laying on one of those like you are bench pressing or sit up and do curls ext... it works all the little muscles, but you also need to do normal workouts… a lot of it is genetic but this will help. good luck"

it is in the book The Art of Expressing the Human Body.

he had several workouts and it was the progression through them that gave him the results he achieved.

You could train Like Bruce. But it will only do you good to train for your needs. To train for tone and such will add smaller mucsle But stiil strengh. Bruce was Of a smaller frame. And his body was his. What You will need or get is in your genes And method. If you have a small frame. And your genatic makeup says you will stay there. You wil have a smaller build. But Agin how you apply your self is what you will get.

Fact is, the small stabilizing muscles are already there. Most people just dont know how to use them. Its techniques. Try this.

straighten your arm out. Have a friend put one arm over your elbow and another on your forearm and push. Chances are he will easily bend your arm.

Now do the same thing, this time dont resist your partner. This time look at a distant object across the room and act like you are reaching for it. Stretch out, point your fingers, and reach. Keep reaching. This time your buddy will probably not be able to bend your arm. This is called the "unbendable arm trick" for that same reason.

In scenario one, you probably resisted your partner. You push against his arm using all your "strength", but what you're using are your large muscles. The muscles tire quickly and you give out.
In scenario 2, by stretching your arm out, you use all your stabilizing muscles across your entire arm. This is why they cannot bend your arm.

Point is, its all technique. It doesnt matter how much you lift or work out if you dont know how to put those muscles into practice anyways. This is why they teach you to think of reaching out when you kick and punch.

Thanks for all the info.. it helps a lot. I have a larger build (broad shoulders, broad hips) but have a strange body. My abdominal area and arms are long and my legs short. What should I do for this? A friend of mine who has been into goju ryu karate told me I should not work on anything but my abs and hips, but I dont see how I would get any punching strength out of that.

Make sure you have plenty of cardio work in your training regime, use medium weights with high repetitions to increase definition and limit musles size.

However if I was you, I would look at your strengths, get strong with med/heavy weights, keep fast with cardio workout and strengthen weak areas.

There is a big difference to looking good and being fighting fit (and having fighting ability). Therefore donot get too involved in appearance, as when push comes to shove, it doesnot matter.

Much of punching power is generated from your abs and hips.

Not so much the abs, but yes 'snapping' your hip into it does help. I.e opposite punching has apparently more snap than a 'same arm, same leg' routine. Even though this true, allot of martial arts dont encourage it, instead keeping a very set form, for example Karate.

Speed times mass gives power in strikeing. The body follows the strike. using forward hip action. So mass is just behind the punch or kick. Then snap after impact. Gives less cushion adding depth. Body strengh has to be utilized. Clinch ground it can give a little more odds. Up right. It can add power IF speed training is used. Where you learn not to over restrict the mucsle groups. Condition plays a big part. Now you say you have a decent upper body. Short legs. Lower center force can be good. Give power. alow some good inside work. Use low kicks Which is often better anyway. Its best not to try to be like anyone other then yourself. With your info. Your frame is way different Then what Bruce carried. And if being a good fighter or anything Was all in how you looked then It would be easy to get there. Just train Find your options test them become good at what you do Push your self to get better. Know your limits. Work on the weak areas. Improve on your strenghs. Find a small tool box of tools And get the best you can from them in your training. Be who you are do not try to be someone else Just learn from others Not trying to be like them
