| Registered User | I'm trying to pick a martial art to join. I can only choose one, and have very limited experience. After getting suggestions from other people, I'm looking into Wing Chun Kung Fu, Okinawan Karate, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I have since decided to add JKD into the possibilities as well. So, does anyone have any suggestions on which I should take and why? My main concern is self-defense, with physical fitness as a secondary. A little background, I'm small framed and light. I tore a tendon in my back twice, and even though its healed, I'm currently in physical therapy in order to get the spasm out, and to rebuild the strength in my back after a year of inactivity. Obviously, I'm concerned about ripping it again. Though I'm going to ask my doctor before I actually do anything, its still something to keep an eye on. So, can anyone help me out? What could work for me? |

![]() | BJJ isn't the best for self defense. Grappling + Mulitiple assailants = dead. I would suggest Wing Chun, but I still advocate JKD. JKD is mixed martial arts, so you get the best of all worlds. Good luck, and I'm no expert or anything. |

![]() | I agree BJJ is good, but can be quite dangerous in real situations. JKD is very good for all round development. Make sure it JKD concepts as, in general, they are more open minded to other forms of training and other ranges than the original guys are. However if you have the opportunity train at a straight blast gym. I live in Scotland and as far as i know, there are no SBG here

![]() | First You have to ask the doctor. Then which ever you decide. Start slow. see how it effects your back problem. Grappleing would tug and pull so I would consider it later. As you recover more completely. JKD Would not be a bad choice. But agin You want to tell a instructor of your needs for now. So you can start slower working up to the more demanding training. Which means you would throw less power into your astrikes and such at first, But could work more on your foot work kicks and such. While getting in better shape. If you find that your injury is not improving. Then You may not be able to at this time get over active in a ma art. Good luck
