![]() | I have recently become very interested in boxing and was wondering what anyone's thoughts are on the weight of gloves and different manufacturers from a JKD perspective. The sparing that is done in a JKD environment is much different that straight boxing. Kenpo gloves have been popular for years but as I talk to people I don't find too many people who actually use them on a regular basis. Any thoughts? Thanks, DarthMorton |

![]() | depends on what kind of advice you want... less weight: this means less padding. you'll feel the punches more. more realistic, as it hurts when you get hit, you can punch faster, and your gloves/hands will be smaller.. if they are smaller, you don't block your whole face and head merely by lifting your gloves up.. more weight: you'll get hurt less due to extra padding. you'll punch a bit slower (great for training, though, as you adjust to weights on your hands) and you may have unrealistic defense with the extra big gloves.. however, you'll also possibly get into more training with the fewer injuries... at any rate, try to at least match glove weights with your opponents.. so noone has an undue advantage. there is a world of difference between 8oz and 16oz gloves..

![]() | I say use both, depending on the focus of the training. In my class if we want to focus on boxing we wear boxing gloves and full head gear. The pain you feel isn't as realistic as it could be, but it pays off in that you don't get brain damage. If we really want to go at it and wail on each other in a prolonged manner that's what we use. If we want to work more clinch or grappling type stuff we use a lighter, fingerless glove. The weight does make a difference, but as long as the other guy is wearing the same weight it doesn't matter that much. It just depends, but my main concern is the no brain damage part, so we use heavy gloves whenever possible.

![]() | exactly the same thing. we have these "chuck norris" bag gloves we use.. (i'm not necessarily a chuck fan..but they work well).. they resemble the fingerless, UFC style sparring glove, with padding at each finger joint.. the padding really isn't much for protecting you from sticks (which makes them perfect for that usage..heh..).. but it's plenty to prevent major contusions and cuts while boxing.. we also have some TKO (not necessarily a fan of that brand either, but i took what i could find for a short term fix..and they ARE good gloves for now..they just don't compare to a good leather set)16oz gloves that i got at sports authority. we tend to box with the gloves on, and do contact drills with the fingerless gloves.. trapping and such. there is more control in those drills, so if you get popped hard, it's your own stupidity..and you deserve to get hit by the lighter glove.. but yeah, that's what we do too..and i like it so far.. dwayne oh, one thing i didn't mention in the previous post.. wearing heavier gloves increases your speed and puts more "snap" into your punches, just like holding one pound weights in each hand while shadow boxing.. a one pound weight, a one pound glove, not much difference..
