Question

Is anyone familiar with the IMB Academy's or Richard Bustillo's training and teaching method? There is an instructor in Miami who is under the IMB Academy, Ted Wong, and Larry Hartsell which I am thinking of checking out. I know that Richard Bustillo was promoted to senior instructor by Guro Dan Inosanto. However, does Sifu Bustillo's curriculum pretty much mirror how the Inosanto Lineage teaches or has been taught. Do they dive into the same arts? Do they use the same progression? Is the Kali they teach the Inosanto Blend? Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you.

Hi KenJeet,
From the JKD that i seen from Sifu Bustillo I would say that it has more of a Thai/Kickboxing and Boxing influence. He still pass's on what he was taught by Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto, but he has found his own way which is what JKD is all about, a personal approach to fighting. The Kali that Sifu Bustillo is teaching is Doce Pares as taught by Grand Master Cacoy Canete.
The IMB method is about being able to function in all ranges from empty hand to weapons and from standing to ground fighting
As for Sifu Bustillo's teaching method what ever he his teaching is easly understod, and you can apply what has been taught.

Default Sifu Richard Bustillo & JKD

Dear Friend & prospective JKD student,
I am a JKD Instructor from India & will answer your querry.
1. Sifu Bustillo is one of the worlds most respected authorities on Jeet Kune Do as is well known.

2. Bruce Lee in his stages of evolution grew from Wing Chun to modified Wing Chun to Jun Fan Kick boxing to Jeet Kune Do to eventually discarding JKD as it would be misunderstood for yet another style. He intended JKD to be each mans individual truth in his combat & lifes journey.

3. People all over the world are claiming to teach JKD without emphasizing that teaching JKD is about helping the student to analyse his fighting, undo his limitations & discover his advantages & use these in his applications.

4. Kali is not JKD but JKD can be applied to Kali, as it can be to any martial art. So donot worry about Thai, Kali & arts taught, they are only the medium to get JKD across to the student. Once understood the indivdual arts will cease to matter. Its like a boat used to cross the river, once across its of no use.

5. Sifu Richard Bustillo emphasizes this without making much fuss over what JKD is or is not. He is one of the very few individuals who teach you JKD in all its aspects, physical, mental, philosophical, spiritual & martial. He is also someone who teaches fighting in all its ranges - long, medium, close & groundfighting.

6. Also, remember in JKD its not who learnt what from Lee. Its about who applies what was learnt. In the words of Lee - Knowing is not enough, we must apply, Willing is not enough, we must do!

7. For further understanding of what JKD is, namely It is not, see this article:

8. So friend dont waste your time - approach Sifu Bustillo & request him to take u on as a student, you will experience a life u never knew!
