I basically agree with your entire post. As for my use of the phrase "street-wise," I was referring to certain types, not they to themselves. I was recalling guys I've have had both good and bad encounters with, who knew how to handle themselvs in the street with or without a weapon. Individuals with almost a sixth sense about them in dangerous situations. I guess, "street-fighters" would've been a better term.

As for their thinking themselves better, more clever, etc, willing to take advantage of anyone. Yes, and no. Two years ago, my uncle made the mistake of renting a flat out to a pastor and his wife. They were total pigs, always late on the rental, and when they skipped a few months later, the unit was a disaster. So much for some "decent" people.

He turned around and rented the unit to a girl and her baby, whose "man" turned out to be one real bad gang leader....

One day he threw a birthday party for his 3 month old child, who's little arm he'd had tatooed his gang symbol on. I remember I was shocked at the stupidity of this....

First thing he did was to call my uncle and tell him, he would keep his guys in check during the party. Sure enough, they came and went for some time without so much as a disturbance. This was a guy I later saw take apart 3 hardcore rival gangmembers without so much as a shred of pity. He was really something with that street-fighting.

This guy obviously knew when to be what... One night I was hassled by 3 of them from a different "set." The next day, at school, one of them saw me and started some nonsense. When he swung at me I took him down, locked him and he stabbed me in the thigh with a big nail-like object he pulled out of his pocket. His friends came along and were about to get into it when this guy my uncle rented to showed up and said something about, 'stay out of it."

Even after I f***d that guy up for having stabbed me, the leader said, 'go on, get out of here; it was a fair fight.'

Later, when my uncle found out and asked the guy about it, he told him he did not even know me. He called all four guys over and made them apologize. The guy who stabbed me even told me that he stabbed me because he does not lose fights. We almost went at it again.... Still, I have never forgotten that gang leader guy.

He's not around anymore. Disapeared one night. But he showed me you can be as cold hearted as a situation warrants, yet be fair in other situations having nothing to do with that world. Yeah, he and a few others I've known like that are few, like the ones who turn their lives around and even go back to help others do the same, etc., but they are out there as well. These people are not all the same.

Anyway, I'm glad that's behind you too.

One of my JKD instructors is a thai boxing and escrima instructor as well and he has helped me mix the two well.

If you look at things like the "black eagle society" you will see how it can be put together, i dont think there are any good videos out there though, most of what is there is pats stuff which is only the spin off group from the original, but still good. i trained with the original black eagle society and there is only one video of that that i know of. there may be more, i dont think so though, and its a private video.

Basically we do everything goes with sticks. so you do sticks on the ground, standing, punch kick knee grapple ground fight. We try out things to see what works, work new ideas that we bring up in sparring and test to see if it works and either accept it or reject it as a group in a full contact environment.
Sparring is fencing head gaurd and cricket gloves, nothing more.

I just focus more on the stand up part of all that more than anything because its what i like.

To me its JKD to others it might not be, what you call it is really irrelevant in the end and im not bothered tbh, but thats what i do outside of my main focus of muay thai.

Hey, that's cool. Sounds like some good stuff. As for JKD or not; you're right. If it works for you, that's what matters. I knew a guy back in my freshmen year of high school; from some kind of secret "dragon" society. He was one heck of a fighter. We used to kind of gauge each other all the time. Still, we hit it off. I hadn't thought about him til now...

So yeah, we may not see eye to eye on definitions fom time to time -even hotly debate them -but I know that in the end, what it's called is not what saves one's butt out there.

Unless that is, you're into that cute little Thai ritual of theirs - yeah - it's on again!

That's a good ability to develop in the central cities, public housings, and favelas (shanty towns) of the world.

I was only giving you my opinion or impression of the people and contemporary culture of American central cities, bro. The "ethics" of the "old school" people are not present in todays central cities - and the elderly in Rio de Janeiro favelas say the same thing regarding the younger favelados (spelling?).

Even the La Cosa Nostra, perhaps the United States most venerated criminal organization, no longer keeps to the "ethics" of her old school made men. And that's not to say the Chicago Outfit didn't long ago take a less media visible role than Al Capone's Chicago with the Tommy Gun, drive-by-shootings, and hand of absolute control over Chicago and Cicero mayoralships.

I'm convinced that the times we live in - throughout all the *Americas* - will be going down in history as a unique period of violence and profits on par with the early industries of sugar and tobacco. This period however will be defined by the cocaine and heroine industries (as they reshaped the structures of societies).

I just think people tend to *glamorize* contemporary urban culture, and its related violence and criminals or just simply hostile people, way to much. I spent a short time in a *very* small town before, a place were people left their doors unlocked at night and even keys in empty, running cars as they entered stores. Meeting some of the people in this town really left an impression on me. People from big urban areas look down on people from communities such as that small town, but as far as I'm concerned, generally speaking, they are 100x better than big city urban folks. And ain't no one going to convince me otherwise.

I have an aunt that lives in a small town like that. Biggest news is often something like the local fire hydrant was just repainted. Such peaceful places. They're amazing. It really hits home when you get back and have start remembering to lock your car door, etc. So, yeah, I'd have to agree.

And yet, a lot of towns in the Southern States of Ameerica that were supposedly like that were at the very same time guilty of some very ugly crimes against balck people for hundreds of years, for no other reason then they're screwed up perceptions of them, either through participation or indifference.

Nothing is black or white. That was my point in my real life example of a Pastor who was an asshole and a gangleader who actually had a code of honor. But your right, even that is more often a thing of the past, these days.

Look at the mess the Catholic Church has turned out to be in for centuries. There are underground graves all over Europe where nuns used to bury their newborns from priests forcing themselves on them. Thousands of them...And now, it turns out that not only have a select number of them been allowed to continue to give new meaning to the word "rectory," but they are still defended by Mother Church.

Appearances too often, not always, but too often turning out to be "like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness."

Anyway, I'm getting depressed. Let's get back to arguing, debating somethig less important like do Ghost and the two Mikes really like each other, are there really two JKDs, was Bruce Lee really that good, or some other such less taxing matter.

Ya, the more you mix with JKD the better. Add some Kali and some Kung fu and some pasta and soon you will have a really nice mix of something.

What I really like is the 5 to 1 ratio you promote. One day of training in JKD pasta is worth five days training in something else. Wow, how did you test that?

A modern MA that uses application as the accelerator with simple and direct attacks?
Or something different?

It was a 5 to 1 training method from traditional MA which they would use Kata instead of application as the learning tool. Hands on training improves your knowledge of the actual events that might take place.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the creator of JKD is the one who stated with application the learning ratio is higher and all the statement that Sifu Galang made in his litature is based on experiance and the late Bruce Lee's word.
