Question Kino Mutai against a knife? wtf?

read he black belt mag with vunak on the cover. in his section he talks about a last ditch effort against a knife by shooting a low level shot and smothering the blade. i guess its in the ehigma but im a broke redneck with 5 bucks to my name can anyone elaborate ot atleast tell me ow youd do it i played around with it in training and got (killed) plenty of times granted im not great at ma but it seems impratical to me id feel more safe taking him down and stomping the snot out of him if i couldnt escape. thoughts anyone?

That does seem pretty sketchy. Anyone seen the video?

yeah I have The Enigma DVD, which endeavours to encapsulate all of Paul's key concepts from his back catalogue, probably due to the legal issues with PFS Video.

I've seen the technique in question and, no disrespect to Paul, it must be one of those that works for him and him alone. Its probably the last thing I would ever do, but I'm not voo.

I’ve got to concur with Michael here, there are so many more things to do empty hand vs. the knife than this. One of the misconceptions about defending yourself against someone with a knife is the belief that you will be confronted by Dan Inosanto on acid. In fact, the technique Vu refers to was tried in real life by Renzo Gracie on the streets of New York where Renzo severely damaged his kneecap. Lucky for Renzo that the mugger scampered off and left Renzo on the ground wailing in pain rather than turning on him with the knife. Ten times out of ten, Renzo would have wasted this guy in the ring (you fight the way you train).
What is really irritating is that so many instructors say there is nothing you can do against a knife, stick and/or gun. Everything is situational and positional! Let me ask everyone a question: Do you think you could disarm a knife from a dead man? How about an unconscious man? Okay, what about some punk whose had a telephone bounced off his face and is seeing stars? What about someone who is drunk or drugged out? Not the typical supercharged drugged that everyone equates against (statistically this is actually super low), but the guy who is sluggish, no coordination and falling over? What about the opportunist who is threatening you with a static posture, knife in hand? What about the guy who is getting ready to draw? Do you see where I am coming from? There are so many variables; surely you can think of something better to show your students other than a low double leg takedown as a solution. A few years back, a beginning student of mine was held up at knife point. He hooked punched the guys forearm and the attacker dropped the knife. It was one of the first techniques I showed the guy which was based on the impact disarms or as Vu himself would call it- Defanging the Snake.

Out

Joe
