Is Jerry Poteet the one who was quoted as saying he didn't like 'that Gracie crap' referring to ground fighting?

    I Doubt It!

    Hey PFSJKD,

What's up? In regards to your post asking if Sifu Jerry Poteet said he dislikes, "the Gracie crap!" I am not speaking on his behalf but because I have trained under him and spent a lot of time talking to him, I would like to give my .02 cents worth. I believe you have him mixed up with someone else.
I have never heard Mr.Poteet talk bad about anybody yet! I have spent a lot of time talking with him one-on-one and I have asked him a lot of questions and he has NEVER insulted any martial artist in my presence!! He is very professional. He has respect for all who train no matter what their discipline or art and he does not dislike people because they train in a different style. I have learned much from him and it has been an honour to train under such a knowledgable person. I would recommend that anyone who wants some serious training seek out his instruction. Thanks.

    Actually I heard that also.
I also heard at an Innosanto seminar it was said that he was
    hardly ever in class.

    Hey Dave,

Now that I think of it, that statement was mentioned over at the UG. The person who said it (can't remember who) was relating it second-hand. So, I'm not sure how much it was worth. But the UG's JKD forum has some great people on it and there was more than one thing said by more than one person that portrayed J. Poteet in a . . . shall we say, less-than-flattering light.

I think the initial discussion was in response to a recent article he had written. Anybody see that article?

    What's That?

    Hey PFSJKD,

Dave here! What is the UG Forum? What is the address to get there? I would like to check it out and see what it's all about.

In regards to Mr.Poteet being portrayed in any way, I guess that's life! Look at it this way, let us say that you and I train together sometime. During our training, there are some things I do that you don't like or I possibly say something that pisses you off. After we finish training, you think I'm an asshole! You go home and tell all of your friends and fellow martial artists this. Now, none of them has ever trained with me and they don't know me but because you and I didn't hit it off and your friends trust you, the 10 people you talk to now think this as well.

Not everybody likes everybody. I know people who hate a lot of well known martial artists but that does not make them bad people. I know a guy who studies Aikido who thinks Steven Seagal is a loser and a fake! I know people who hate Dan Inosanto, Lamar Davis, Ted Wong, Paul Vunak, and I even know some people who despise Bruce Lee - himself! All of these people are important / well known people in the JKD World but they still have people who dislike them. I guess what I'm trying to tell everyone is - Unless you experience something or someone for yourself DO NOT believe someone elses opinion because they might have a different outlook than you will!

    Dave,

The URL of the UG is www.mixedmartialarts.com.

Click on the Underground link and you'll see several different Q&A forums.

I hear what you're saying about gossip and agree up to a point. I never take just one person's opinion as truth on the Internet. However, there were several posters who mentioned a couple different things. Now, I'm not saying that Mr. Poteet is no good; far from it. But all the comments about him by different people constituted a trend. This trend may reflect reality. . .and then again it may be completely off base.

That being said, sometimes someone else's opinion is all that we may have to go on. It's unavoidable. Both here and in face-to-face situations. Most people don't have the time and energy to experience everything for themselves, so they ask. Some people will always bring out something negative. Some will always go positive. Earlier you told me that your experience was positive. Then you said in your last post to not believe someone else's opinion because they might have a different outlook. I don't think you want me to discount your opinion, do you? Otherwise why would you give it? Because you feel it to be true. (In Stuart Smally's voice) And that's. . .OK.

I look for the statisical significance on most of the topics here. I don't disbelieve your opinion of Mr. Poteet. But others have related a negative personal experience with him. Who's right? What's the truth? I believe it could be both and it could be neither. But if 100 people started posting and all had the same general opinion, that's significant. Know what I mean, Vern?

    Hey PFSKD,

Dave here again! I went to that forum but I couldn't find the post in regards to Jerry Poteet. Exactly which forum was it on? Thanks again!

It was on the JKD forum. But it was a while ago, so it's probably not there anymore. You can't go back and view old threads as far back as you can here.

I believe the thread was titled (and I'm not making this up) "Jerry Poteet's Godawful Article" or something with a definite negative tone in reaction to the article where Poteet claims that most JKDers are training in "JKD-lite".

Mr. Poteet is not one to "Badmouth" anyone person or system of fighting. It is a shame how much people can take things out of text. I might say something to one person in a group of 20-100 people and by the time it returns is out of context.........Wow!! I can not believe the gossip which goes on here.......Very sad!!!! Guro Bruce Lee would not like this at all.
