Question Regrading JKD in general

Greetings!

I've been doing research on Bruce Lee's life and JKD in general for a while now. I recently finished "The Art of Expressing the Human Body" and "The Tao of JKD", and i've decided to incorporate many of Bruce Lee's ideas, and philosophies into my lifestyle, as well as integrate his JKD teachings into my previous experience of Kung Fu. My goal is much more than just learning martial arts, and more of a strong devotion to a way of life, much like Bruce Lee did. In this way, I think I can complete the circle of my life and make myself more complete. With that being said, I don't think it's quite possible to learn from a book or a DVD without practicing with a human being and sharpening your skills. Thus, my search for a school or instructor continues...

Back to the topic at hand, however. I've been doing some research regarding JKD schools in the Greater Los Angeles/San Fernando area, but I haven't been able to get a lot of accurate information regarding several schools and the programs they offer. I've contacted many of the schools, though it's hard to choose due to an absence of exact information.

I understand that the Greater LA area features some of the best JKD schools and teachers in the world, but I can't find any definite information.

First and foremost, does anyone know what happened to Premier JKD (Premier JKD Martial Arts - Jeet Kune Do - Jun Fan Gung Fu). They are the closest to me, but it seems the phone number is disconnected and I assume they are out of business. Does anybody actually know?

Second, I see a lot of schools are offering mixed types of classes, integrating concepts of JKD (Wing Chun, I guess?) with Silat, Kali, Escrima, and MMA.

I guess my question is... Since each school has a multitude of Senior and Junior instructors, is it safe to assume each has a contrasting unique style featuring JKD as a base, stemming into the more advanced concepts of other martial arts?

With that being said, would anyone kindly tell me their experiences, thoughts, or recommendations on the below schools? :
Inosanto Academy (Near the PCH)
SGV JKD (Near Pasadena, a bit far)
Magda Institute (Reseda?)

Please feel free to criticize or correct anything I may have said.

Thanks a lot.

Inosanto Academy! Hands Down the best you will find in the world! Being that Dan Inosanto is the only one certified under all 3 of Bruce Lee's martial arts incarnations ( Jun Fan Gung Fu, Jun Fan Kickboxing and Jun Fan JKD). Also he is the standard barer in martial arts in general in my opinion.

He has many instructors all over the world and and they are world class martial artsis themselves.

If I lived in your area there would even be a choice.

Hope this helps.

Hi derelicte,

My name is Nhan from San Gabriel Valley Jeet Kune Do, a student of mine forwarded me your post, so I thought I would reply to it myself.

That's really awesome that you are delving into martial arts, especially JKD, at such a deep level. Very few people, including instructors, really ever move beyond the superficial.

Regarding your questions, you will no doubt find some level of value from any training source. If I understand your goals correctly, however, the key is finding classes taught in small groups and by an instructor who shares similar values and goals. You will really only determine this by talking to the instructor or at least trying out a few classes.

As for my own school, I stick almost strictly to Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do (as opposed to Concepts or any of the other hybrid systems). I emphasize solid physical development, fundamental skills, and most importantly, mental/emotional/spiritual development of self.

Personal growth and self development is perhaps the single most important element in Bruce Lee's own training, yet it is the most neglected aspect in the average JKD school curriculum.

My blog offers a good representation of my beliefs and approach to martial arts. Check it out at http://www.nkhuong.com

I have also recently begun an apprenticeship program for those interested in pursuing martial arts as a career and, of course, developing their own skills and abilities maximally.

Good luck on your journey, let me know if you are interested in training with us.

In regards to Premier JKD:

Here is the short version....on going Lawsuit against General Growth Properties (Owners/operators of Fallbrook Mall).

Unfortunately, due to the costs of lawsuit, Now Sifu Dane only trains Private Students. A group of us train about 2x a week with him.

Do a quick Google search on Gen Growth and you will find a Myriad of lawsuits against including ( General Growth Settles Caruso Lawsuit for $48M General Growth Settles Caruso Lawsuit for $48M)

Default or

I would go to the tommy carruthers seminar I'm running in Tucson July 25th and 26th. You are going to learn more about jkd at this seminar then any of these other schools. Tommy has brought the bar in jkd higher then any other Instructor or student of Bruce.
