Question Guns everyone

Question especially to the advanced JKD'ers does JKD/Kali/Silat have good gun defense tactics, techniques. If so please explain. Thanks. The reason i asked is because i was looking at another forum and someone was saying that they thought there was a better way for selfdefense that trapping and they didnt think JKD had defense for guns.(not he wasnt saying anything in a negative way he was just giving his opinion) I think he studies Krav maga

I think that JKD would have the perfect situation to gun defense if there was such a thing.

You see, JKD isn't a "style". Therefore, it doesn't have a composite set of gun defensive tactics. JKD uses whatever works.

Therefore, my JKD to a gun situation might be, giving the bad guy my wallet. Or, running perhaps. Because, imo, you just can't beat a bullet! The guy with the gun has the advantage and to think otherwise is just an exercise in foolishness and futility.

To someone who says that they know the perfect defense against guns, I'll read about you in the newspaper one day.

The best defense as with anything, is awareness. You must not put yourself in situations where you can easily be ambushed, etc..

If you're attacked in your home, that's another situation entirely. You have to do whatever you can. Actually, if you've no choice but to fight, one of the best choices is to rush the attacker before he's set. Don't give someone the chance to draw a bead on you.
I know this is difficult, but if you learn to read body language, perhaps attacking on the inhalation, just before the exhalation of breath (again by rushing) and using HKEs.

There is just no perfect defense against a gun.

By a cap gun or a toy blank gun and work those scenarios with a partner. See if you can hit your partner before you hear the "bang". You can practice this with ANY disarming techniques!

Good training!

The cap gun thing isn't that great:
1) You could hit the guy, which pisses him off, & he caps you. A hit is not a disarm.
2) You could move offline, hear a bang before you hit. But the bullet may have missed.

Best bet, IMO, is airsoft guns. Get eye protection & have at it. Very enlightening.

AND PAINFUL!! We do a lot of training with airsoft guns and man, those little fukkers hurt! You really do have to watch the eyes, but it's very enlightening indeed.

My best advice is, just like when you want to get good at anything else, be it knife fighting / self-defense, boxing, muay Thai, BJJ, or anything, you have to get good at both sides of the equation. Learn to shoot pistols, rifles, and shotguns, and learn the basic tenets of tactical shooting and marksmanship (very different things...) Once you understand the kind of things that work offensively, you can develop a better nose for what will work defensively. Just think back before kali was really popular, and remember all those guys who thought realistic knife self-defense involved doing an Aikido irimi nage against a running overhead stab. They had unrealistic techniques that were les than effective, because they had ineffective, unrealistic attacks to base them on. People realized this as soon as kali knife fighters started popping up and delivering multiple attacks and fakes quickly and fluidly on several different lines. The same is true for gun training. You can train with airsoft, capguns, or rubber guns for years, and you can get to the point at which you're fully capable of disarming anyone in your club, but if you ever end up in a situation for real, and the attacker takes a different structure than what you've trained against, you're screwed. So take the time to learn the real-world applications of firearms, and your defense against them will be worlds better than if you don't.

Incidentally, Harley requires his advanced level instructors to learn the basics of firearms, and to functional marksmen. It's written into his curriculum, which just goes to show you that there are high level JKD/Kali people out there who make it a priority. In my opinion, since guns are a very common weapon used to commit violent crimes, if you don't learn about them the same way you do any other range, then you're fooling yourself.

Bahala Na,
Mike
