Question Reverse vs Forward grip

Mr. Richardson,

I was wondering what insights you have gained when sparring using both reverse and forward grip using a knife with aprox. 4 inches of blade length.

I train in both grips but would prefer reverse if in a self-defense situation. For the following reasons, grip seems stronger, can be used if attacked from behind, seems to flow better especially when changing from slashing to thrusting. Also greater thrusting power, easier to keep the point between me and opponet.

I know some people say it's limits you on going into long range. But I would say that the 4 inch blade would be more of a limiting factor on range. My defintion of long range is switch to my 19 or 21 inch ASP Baton. In reverse grip, Bob Taylor I belive has said the reach you give up is 1 1/2 to 3 inch depending on your flexibility, not really that much in the context of a dynamic fight.

Anyway I would appreciate any comments you might have, as my
training has been limited. Some group classes with Al Mclucky from Ft. Wayne IN, would like to take privates when I can afford it.
I also plan on purchasing both sets of your tapes in the near future. Keep up the good work with JKD Unlimited, that kind of philosophy has been what I have been looking for ever since I became interested in Martial Arts.

Here are a few observations from my experience in knife sparring. That 1 1/2 inch difference can be the difference between life and death! Hold a training knife point 1/4 inch from your throat. Now move it 1 1/4 inches closer to you. Life and death can be a matter of millimeters. Forward grip has greater reach, and also is more accurate with thrusting and is more manuverable due to our bone structure. Reverse grip is more concealed, and is very powerful. If you have your knife out for a fight, it is doubtful that someone will be able to get behind you, unless there are many attackers. If someone sneaks up behind you, you can choose your grip at that time, depending on how you carry your knife. Bottom line, they both work very well, and you should spar with both grips against both grips. Enjoy!
