Michael,

What are the strong points of PFS teaching in comparison to other methodologies that you have seen. I have read both Vunak's books, and seen one of his tapes but don't have a great deal of practical info on Vunak/PFS. I'd be interested in your point of view as you are certified under the guy.

From what I have seen it seems that PFS has quite a varied curriculum.I suppose what I am asking is what does Vunak/PFS do better than the others, if "better" is the right word.

As you rightly say, I'll avoid the label of "better", but will focus on some key strengths. I'll try to articulate what could be a very long answer into three key points, all purely my point of view.

1. Enough is as good as a feast. One of the things PFS does very well is that it knows when to stop. When using weaponry to supplement your attributes, at what point does it become needless duplication? Do you need 75 stick and knife drills or can 5 well chosen, well trained drills give you what you need? So much of Paul's instruction has been based on makng people very good very fast, whether that is the military, police or you and I. To do that you need to circumvent the superficial and stick to the essence of what you are trying to achieve. PFS does that very well.

2. A Teaching Toolkit. Paul's goal for his instructors is that they have the tools to teach anyone from any walk of life, therefore PFS (certainly the Full Instructor curriculum) is very good at having the right solution to the right problem. Working with a soldier? We've got a toolset for that. Teaching your girlfriend some solid self-protection? We've got that. And perhaps most important of all, Paul has organized the program in a way that is not only easy to learn, but easy to teach.

3. It has been tested. There is very little theory in PFS. Paul's practical experience is well known and widely documented. I spent a lot of time training with Tom Cruse (I lived at his house for a while) and he always shared what had worked and how in what circumstances. Some of my PFS training partners in the US have included members of the SEALs, DEA, Marines, LAPD and you are doing a drill and one of the guys will tell you how and why it has worked for them. PFS is a product of experience.

I could go on but that's probably enough from me. A good guy to input would be Mike Brewer, my senior and one of my first teachers. Mike is old school PFS and spent more time under Paul than most.

Thank you, that's a very interesting post. I am particularly impressed that PFS has been so widely tested. I think it's is essential that any material that purports to be applicable for real fighting (either in a ring, or in self protection) be tested at some point for real. I think it's the only way students can have confidence in the material being presented.
