Question

Has anybody experience with the SCARS selfdefense system? ( http://www.scars.com )
Is it really as effektive as they claim? How does it work compared to JKD or PFS?

A lot of people here have had experience debunking it.

Thumbs down SCARS eh?

Sometime ago after reading an article in Detail's mag and Men Health giving SCARS big reviews I decided to invest one hundred dollars and buy one of there packages. The packet included a book on techniques, a chart listing over hundred vital points and nerves and two videos. After going through all the stuff I came to the concludsion that those mag writers have no idea what they were talking about. All SCARS looked like to me was basic San Soo Kung Fu with the instructors wearing cargo pants and sporting goatees and crew cuts sprewing out technical trash talk. I was really disappointed by what I saw. I mean they teach you to throw your punch from the hip karate kid style after all. If I wanted to learn to fight like that I would go to a McDojo and pay way less money. As it is SCARS was never taught to actual SEALs, it was taught to BUDs students who got pass hell week back in the early eighties but has not been used by any of our military branches in a long long time. I suggest buying a SCARS video and judge for yourself on how effective it really is, for me I'll stick to things like BJJ, Muay Thai, JKD and whatever else I can find.

GinSueDog:

That's the beauty of forums like these. I, too, read that stuff in some non-MA mags a while ago and thought "Hmmm. I gotta check that sheet out!"

Good thing I didn't waste my money! As it was, last year some SCARS person planted a bogus story here about how great it was--complete with bogus accounts of taking on people using it--and everybody just dog-piled on him. That led to much discussion about it, and somebody who had been through it pulled the curtain away.

I'm sure they have some valid stuff, but the punching from the hip thing is ree-diculous. Also, they rip on JKD and just about everything else.

Black Belt mag, however, also did a feature on it and raved about it. I wonder how these articles and the reality can be so different!

Yah I especially like how they have ragged on some of my instructor's at PFS and alike. I have a number they can call me at: 1-800-SICK-MY-DUCK.
