![]() | I can say that a lot of people don't prefer the hooking punches (unless you've got an attachment) because they leave you vulnerable to getting shot on for one thing. They are also less accurate, and if you hit someone's noggin, you could break your hand. Straight punches are more accurate. If you hit the (relatively) soft tissue of the nose area, you're not as likely to break the bones. Of course, you do run the risk of hitting your opponent's teeth (in which case you should definitely seek treatment of the wound pronto). However, if you're too worried about breaking your hand, hitting someone's teeth or anything else, you probably would do better than to get in fights in first place! -John |

![]() | The reason I posted that is because I see that most street fights have out of control swinging while the person rushes at you. So in case the sanario happens you know what to do.

![]() | In Jun Fan, the base of JKD, we do use the circular path (i.e. hooks, uppercuts, backfists, shovel hooks, overhands, etc.). It is a part of our common arsenal, however, geometry tells us that the straight shot will get there faster than the curved. Therefore, we must look at why we would throw the curved shot at certain times: 1) it adds more lines of attack and 2) a lot of power can be gererated by a curved attack. Even in SiGung Bruce's "original" teachings, it is expressed that when the straight line is obstructed, the curved line can efficiently be employed. If you keep your punches short and sweet and your defense is good, curved blows can be highly beneficial. |

![]() | I practice hooks both with a fist and open handed (pimp slap style!). Not only does this protect your hand, I know from experience that a good palm to the ear can put someone down (perforated a guy's ear drum with one). |

![]() | If you want to be able to defend against wild swinging punches (very common in street attacks) you have to practice against them. In our JKD Unlimited classes, we train where one person comes in wild, not controlling the blows, and the other has to clinch, takedown, or try to stay out of range. It is easiest to enter, because the attacker is usually rushing so fast that moving backwards doesn't work well. Aloha
