Question JKD, Traditional JJ or ??

I've just started researching various styles and I've found that there is so much information it's leaving me a bit confused about which path I should take. I'm looking for realistic self-defense skills that are street applicable and can be used in a real world street fighting situations. The JKD concept seems to be the best fit at first glance, but what concerns me is the very thing that makes it such a great style. Should such a newbie start with JKD which is based on free-form and not a particular style/pattern or would it be more productive for me to get a few years experience in an art like traditional Jiu Jitsu? ALso, does JKD have a belt system? If not, how can one expect to set goals of accomplishment? I want to be able to know where I'm going and measure my levels of achievement. I prefer stand fighting to grappling although I certainly see the benefit of ground fighting if you end up there. I'm 29 and 6'1" 190lb if that makes a difference. Location is Houston, TX so if anyone knows a good local gym, that would be great. As for know, I'll look in the yellow pages and visit gyms in the area. Any insight is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Default Use Your Yellow Pages

Don't get trapped (no pun) in the 'which style' conflict. Good technique isn't confined to one system.

Sounds like your looking for realistic combat training so you should really inquire about SPARRING. Ask how often the students spar, and how many students like to spar.

Go to different schools, watch classes, try classes. I'm sure you'll find something you like.

the owner of this forum has a school that looks like it will fit your needs perfectly. Check it out. As for getting a good base in one art first, I wouldn't worry about it. The human brain is very complex and able to handle multiple learning all at once. When you were in grade school did you take only math, or only science etc.? No you were able to study multiple disciplines at once and learn them all. The comment about sparring is right. Make sure they sparr in kicking range, punching range and on the ground. If you want to learn weapons check that out too. As for rank I have trained in schools that worked both ways with and without rank. I haven't found much difference in my ability to set goals. The sparring will take care of your goalsetting.

Don't worry about belts. You'll find your own goals in whatever art you choose without needing the artificiality of different colored belts.
