Thumbs down ah

I saw the book, and was quite disappointed. VERY basic brazilian jujitsu. What really turned me off was how he went off on how he trained with Royce Gracie, learned this and that from him, etc., etc.

Well, what ticked me off was that, as he was trying to impress upon the reader that he had trained long enough with Royce Gracie, he ended up spelling his name JOYCE Gracie!! WTF!?!?

Very, very disappointed.

Fist Info on Alan Ground

Just wanted to add that I train with Alan Ground. The man is dedicated and extremely knowledgeable. If you have the opportunity to learn anything from him whether it be from a book, video or in person I would take it. His training has completely transformed my abilities. As for the the miss spell I would imagine it was an accident rather that ignorance.

Now I am in no way trying to bash Alan Ground. I've never even heard of him before this thread. But this is my opinion based on finding his book on Amazon.

I'd personally be skeptical of anyone falsely claiming to be "well known at the creator of JKD ground fighting". Larry Hartsell became a JKD specialist in the ground game and even he didn't claim to be the creator of a JKD ground game.

The jkd grappling association (if you are interested look them up.) has a bunch of dvd's of the late Sifu Hartsell. I'd bet if you compare him to alan their would be no comparison.

Also Greg Nelson and Eric Paulson also have many DVD's out on the subject. But Alan Ground could be a realist alternative to Nelson or Paulson. You would have to compare and decide for yourself.

IMHO alan ground may have let the name ground go to his head. But to be fair it could just be a publicist gone amok.

But if you look at JKD girl first she asks what people think. Then comes out that she trains with him and how great he is.

Joe Hubbard will become famous soon enough

I remember this guy’s name coming up years ago in Black Belt magazine. No sooner did he arrive on the scene, he seemed to vanish off the radar. From my recollection, wasn’t he a basic instructor under Vunak? He then went on to train heavily with BJJ player Alan Goes. He was advertising that book and some videos through Black Belt magazine, but it seems like he doesn’t have a web page and is not that active these days. JKD Girl, do have a web link for this guy? Update us on what he has been up to. I was interested in his description of his ground fighting program where he was describing how he was integrating BJJ, Silat and ground & pound.

He mentions a lot of the main JKD players in his work, but never references his actual study with them, or any authority to teach the art. Typically when releasing a book on your chosen area of study, a small biography about your background and credentials in that area are a given? The absence of one is curious.

His books are self-published, always raises questions, and probably accounts for the appalling spelling and grammar. However, what raises a caution flag is that they are all self-publicised. That means when you read “he is well known as the creator of Jeet Kune Do Groundfighting” or “he is one of the most gifted and technically proficient trainers of our time”…the person saying that about Alan Ground, is Alan Ground.
