Default size dont matter

I was always told that bigger is better. Im 6"2 and i was told that my long legs were a good attribute.

However i met geoff thomson 3 days ago (in Britain he's pretty famous and dangerous he has wrote ALOT of books) and he dont seem that big at all 5"10. He is probably one of the best martial artists (on the street).

I agree, I am a big guy myself I am six foot tall and I wiegh about 285. I am well muscled to. My instructor is much smaller than me and my normal uke is also much smaller than me and I have seen both of them throw me and other larger opponents around the dojo and the streets.

Size is merely one of many attributes that can be used to enhance your fighting performance. The problem is that many people over emphasise it's importance.

But that doesn't mean we should UNDERemphasise it. Remember, they have weight categories in just about every unarmed combat sport for a reason.

Yep, I have heard of Geoff Thompson. I have his "Dead or Alive" book and the "Real Punching" series of videos.

Go here for details of my club and instructor.

Talking

I'm about 5'8-5'9 and 175.
It's not that size doesn't matter, it's just that smaller guys know they've got to be good to deal with it!

I hope my wife doesn't see this thread....

Size does matter. So does strength, speed, experience, mindset etc....

All aspects are important, especially the one you discount as trivial.

Besides, if size really didn't matter, Bitty wouldn't have to shop in the Magnum section at the Pharmacy.

I say size doesn't matter

Yeah. Right.

Put two dogs together with the same amount of "fight". Then watch the bigger dog eat the other one for dinner.

Size can be hindering just as easy as it can be helpfull. A bigger person is usually slower and less manueverable on the ground and on his or her feet. so size doesnt matter for people and as far as dogs go I would place money on a pit bull fighting a saint bernard anyday and the pit bull is much smaller

That may well be. But many of the small "dogs" out there are poodles. Like you.

I love meeting people with that mind set. I'm 6',6" tall and weigh in at around 265-270 with long legs that are like tree trunks. Ajarn Wilson (AKA Chalambok) has pointed out to me many times that I move like a much smaller person. Very quick and maneuverable. Quite a few folks have made the mistake in thinking that I'm going to be a slow lumbering giant only to be surprised as s..t that I'm all over them before they can blink.
My point?
Never under estimate ANY opponent. Big or small. Geeky looking or your Biker type. Unless your familiar with that person, you never know what you might get. (that kinda sounds like a Gumpism ).

Default size

size definately matters as long as they have the technique and fitness. I train under the Geoff Thompson branch, and had a one to one boxing lesson with a 6'+ 17 stone instructor, I went in to hurt him and ruff him up and all I got was a beating though I intend to get him back.

I agree that big people are capable of fast movements but is not the norm. I also agree that one should never under estimate any one . My point was that size isnt the only thing that makes a man dangerous.
and as for the one who refers to me as a poodle I got some news for ya smart ass. a poodle was bred to be a fighting dog and a hunter but they are now treated as harmless pets. I am sure you share there paine.
