Cool SBG-BJJ Spring event update!

Spring Camp is approaching fast.

When: March 21st - 23rd

Where: Double Tree Inn Portland OR 1000 NE Multnomah
(a few blocks from the Portland branch of the SBG)
Contact event coordinator Mike Adams at (509) 998-6746 to receive the Camp member rates.

Cost: 135. both days (SBGI members) 165. non members
80. one day (SBGI members) 110. one day non members

This Year we have moved the camp from the usual spot at the Ramada Inn to the downtown Double Tree Inn. This hotel is larger, nicer, and much closer to Portland's downtown area. Just a three minute drive to the heart of downtown Portland, and within walking distance of the Portland branch of the SBG.

Events scheduled:

On Friday March 21st will be the Gorilla Cup Submission Wrestling/BJJ tournament.
This event is FREE to all SBGI members attending the Spring Camp!

This is event is open to all SBGI members, and it's purpose is to allow SBG'rs from around the world, and the USA an opportunity to compete and have FUN in a safe and friendly environment. The tournament is open to ALL levels of athletes, and there will be plenty of divisions for beginners, and white belts in BJJ. So don't let your lack of experience stop you from participating! This tourney is for EVERY-BODY.

Divisions will be held according to experience (white belt-purple belt) and weight. The weight classes will be:

135lbs and under/ 135-150/ 150-165/ 165-180/ 180-195/ 195-210/ 210-225/ 225 +
As well as a WOMEN'S division, and an OPEN class.

All matches will be NO-GI, bit you are free to wear a gi if you like. An OPEN MAT GI ROLL will be held in the backroom for anyone wanting to try that.

Weigh in's begin at 6:30pm and the event will begin at 7pm. Chris Haueter, Matt Thornton, and Tom Oberhue will be on hand to ref the matches (as well as other SBG Coaches), and we plan on having three mats running at once to help the event speed along.

The Camp will begin Saturday morning at 10am at the Portland Double Tree Inn.

Sunday night at 8pm at Hung Far Low in downtown Portland will be a Camp Banquet, B-day Party for SBGI Prez Matt Thornton (Matt will once again be turning 22 Years old), and Graduation for ICC 2002. Don't miss this Dinner, and Party. It will be a blast! Directions to the restaurant will be available at the Camp.

Instructors Include:

Chris Haueter, Chris Haueter has pursued the "way" of the Martial Arts literally all of his life. By the age of sixteen, Chris had achieved his first black belt in the classical arts. Only two Years later he could be found competing at the state and national level in American and freestyle wrestling. Chris discovered competitive boxing and closed quarter combat while serving in the US Marine Corp. In 1983-84, Chris's sponge like ability to learn found a home at the Inosanto Academy in Los Angles, California. When Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu found Chris in 1989 he had already earned a level of "Instructor" at the Inosanto Academy in Muay Thai kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do, Kali, and western boxing. The hook of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sank deep into Chris after his very first experience of "rolling" on the mat with the great BJJ Coach Rigan Machado.
In the eleven Years that have past, Chris's involvement in the art of BJJ has been total. An assistant Instructor 1993, promoted to black belt in 1996, Chris became one of only a handful of Americans to hold a black belt in this highly technical and complex Art. As a black belt Chris served as Machado competition team captain, a coach, and competitor. In addition to numerous colored belt victories, Chris was the first American black belt to compete in the Mundial De Jiu-Jitsu (world championships) held each Year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Chris with Randy Couture

Chris makes no claim at being the fastest, one of the most technical, or one of the toughest competitors (all of which would be arguably true if he made them). Instead, he can be heard telling students about the "boxes inside boxes" nature of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; that in their lifetimes, no matter how good they get, there will always be more to discover about the "art without limits". Chris Haueter is humble. It is precisely this quality that has been molded by the legend Rigan Machado, and the other master grapplers if the Machado family that has created one of the best Coaches of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the world.

SBGI founder Matt Thornton:

In addition to founding the SBGI Matt is a Black Belt in Machado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Matt began doing seminars in 1995 at the request of the USA's first Savate Instructor, Daniel Duby, who asked if he would fly to his Island of Reunion to teach a series of seminars. Daniel provided the Savate influence they have at the Gym, and also became a great friend of the SBG. Since that time Matt has given over one hundred seminars and traveled all over the world to spread the message of Aliveness, the curriculum of the SBG, and the beauty and Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Matt has taught in Africa, France, the UK, Denmark, Ireland, Reunion Island, the Seychelles, and all across the USA.

It has been this travel, teaching, training, and process of self-discovery that has shaped Matt's philosophy on what training 'healthy' in the Martial Arts is all about.

Tom Oberhue:

2002 Brown belt in BJJ
2000 Purple belt in BJJ
1998 Coach / owner of Beaverton SBG
1997 Graduate of 1st ICC class
1995 Master's in Education / professional teaching license - secondary level
1995 Began training at SBG with Matt Thornton
1994 Black Belt in WHKD kung fu
1993 Began children's club
1985 Began training martial arts
Morgan Smith:

Founder of Hardcore Pilates training, and SBGI conditioning Coach. Morgan is currently in high demand for seminars, and training regarding her extraordinary conditioning routines.

Topics to be covered include:

-Active Guard (sweeps, submissions, and anti-ground & pound tactics)

-Striking in the clinch. (including a new series of drills designed to take your clinch game up a notch or two)

-Escapes from the bottom.

-The crushing top game, and rolling pin knee ride.

-Crazy Monkey drills, and boot kicks (street Savate).

-Chokes from all positions, with GI, t-shirt, and no-gi.

-Hardcore conditioning warm ups.

Plus much, much more. Including special sections taught by other SBGI Coaches, and possible Q&A sections on nutrition, and supplements with pro-sports trainer Liam Bauer.

Don't miss this Camp!
