not really an opinion but I read about some master who killed a horse with a twist of his palm.

there was no damage on the outside of the horse, but when some curious people cut it up they found that all of its organs had been crushed.

I always thought that iron palm was when they put poison on their palms and when you struck somebody they would die because the poison would go throught their skin and to prevent the poison from killing them they would put wax on their palms before the poison but then again I think that was the buddhist palm or perhaps the monkey palm or maybe something else. Anyways I think the horse was made of jello or maybe it had the bubonic plague because that turns your innards into jello.

Default my take on iron palm

ya I know i used to do that. I took wing chun from a good friend of mine who was certified in it. It was nice cuz I got free private lessons. Before each lesson, he would have me straight blast a sand bag for about thirty minutes while he talked to me about wing chun principals. He also had this bucket filled with sand and he would have me punch into it and squeeze and twist the sand.
Afterwards, my forearms just ached! It was like I had been doing wrist curls untill my hands went numb.
He was very religious about iron knuckle training. He had graduated from the sand bag to a bag of ball berrings! He told me that hand conditioning was very important because the wing chun straight blast occured at very close ranges, risking a strain to your wrist . the human skull is harder than one thinks!. But more importantly, he said I was getting in my repetitions . Afterall, I was straight blasting for thirty minutes at a time.
One afternoon while at my house, I witnessed him punching the trunk of our oak tree , and leaving small dents in it. Eyes wide with wonder , I asked him what his secret was.
He smiled at me and said " Nerve damage."

Nerve Damage!!!
I think the human skull requieres 8 lbs of force per every square inch to crack it so I don't know how hard it really is. Besides you can always hit him over his crown.

if I was to punch a tree I would be afraid it would put dents in me.

Yeah, nerve damage. Iron palm is basically toughening your hands, knuckles, palms etc. by striking sand in a container repeatedly in different ways (fist punch, palm slap, reverse slap, finger jabs). As one's training progresses the sand is heated.
Further progression leads to replacing the sand with smooth gravel (or ball bearings), and so on. Your hands and wrists become stronger, your skin becomes thicker and tougher. Takes years.

The down side is that you deaden a substantial amount of nerve tissue in your hands so that you don't feel as much pain when you strike an opponent in a fight, or as much pleasure when you caress the back of your woman's neck.

I've also read that if done incorrectly there are nerve meridians running through your hands which can adversely affect your eyesight, balance and intelligence if damaged.

And so your hands, one of nature's greatest wonders, become little more than wooden clubs. Not for me , thanks.

Horse shit.

Anyway, perhaps this thread should be re-titled "Hand Damage"
