Never heard of such a thing, but by the sound of it, you'd have to be crazy to believe it's legitimate... Try the Martial Monks of Shaolin Flying Arts aisle.

Crazy Monkey is a term used by the SBG. Its a methodology of how you move your hands and body in defense. Try the mma.tv forums,or the Straight Blast Gym website. Sounds like you can also purchase a video and of course you could always visit one of the SBG's and ask or just watch.

I think, maybe not tho.

It differs from boxing in many aspects although boxing is the delivery system from which the Crazy Monkey evolved.

The feet are more "squared" up to the opponent. The athletes elevation/posture is lower. Jabs and Crosses should feel about the same to your opponent.

This is a specific approach taken to deal with the challenges faced in NHB/MMA/Street situations.

As Yenhoi said, feel free to drop in and check it out. We work this every session.

It depends on which "crazy monkey boxing" you are talking about. There is a guy from S.Africa with a style called that. He has nothing to do with shao lin or kung fu or JKD. It's his style of boxing that is more usefull in NHB.

As Paul Sharp mentioned the crazy monkey was developed by South African SBGi Instructor Rodney King.

All of us within SBGi have added the crazy monkey method to our curriculum as it has proven itself to be highly effective in MMA and boxing. It's a very simple and easy form of defense that prevents our athletes from taking needless punches to the head or body.

There will be a three tape video series hitting the market next week from SBG Productions for those interested in the delivery system.

enjoy

Funny.....Rodney is a great guy and knows his stuff. If you have the chance to learn crazy monkey, do it, you won't regret it.

My BJJ coach is inviting him for the MMA fighters in my area... Hopefully me and his other BJJ students can get in cheap if there are enough people for the seminars.

Jules,
Let us know how you liked his stuff. I had a chance to see it recently and it was an incredible eye opener. I don't know why you would want to do anything else for standup.

Donno. As a MT guy I seem to be a bit biased.

jules,
make sure you ask Rodney about MT and crazy monkey. He has adapted and modified some MT and made it more accessable to people who don't have the attributes to be good MT fighters. Rodney is a great MT fighter and knows the art well. I think he will open your eyes to some of the flaws of the system.

Doubleouch has covered an important issue.

CM is based on challenges faced by a MMA/NHB athlete. You need to address takedowns, leg kicks, clinch, opponents with greater skill in standup and other factors. There is more than just one game to be developed here. If standup were the only threat, than I would agree, Boxing or Thai is the way to go. In MMA/NHB you need to be able to bang on your feet or on the ground, in the clinch or outside. You also need to move safely from outside to inside if you realize you are out-gunned and need to tie them up.

CM will take you there.

Those elements also comprise issues faced in a street altercation once things start going down the tubes and you have to go hands on.

Strictly training in Boxing or Muay Thai is great, but it has worked to our advantage to let go of personal preferences and adapt to the challenges we must face in the areas of MMA/NHB/Self-defense.
