Joe Lewis Interview

Can someone please comment on the JLFS (Joe Lewis Fighting System) program? I live in Greece and am thinking of enrolling on this program. It will cost me though about $40 per month, so I would like to hear opinions, experinces, info on this program and if it's worth it.

chuck norris did the same thing. studied with/under bruce then left and created his own style. joe lewis is a hard worker in the art but thats a disrespectful thing to do. maybe he is mad because bruce did not certify him. lee was awesome, and 30 someodd years later we are still griping about him. how about the gracies, jj was here before them, i am suprised that people are not saying - gracies are not that bad,jj was here way before them,etc etc.- please understand my point here, no disrespect to gracies they have achieved alot, and opened many eyes. but bruce did create and advance to so much, he set the spirit free to fly upon themselves. is everyone going to bash gjj 10 years from now? that seems like the human cycle thing to do. you go to a couple seminars, then bam you open your own club,and in return you bash the person that you studied under to gain public sound and view. do that to the gracies and they will fly out and find you and shut you up. but a lot of great instructors are always too humble and have too much on thier plate. but to down someone for fame is such a pulling on their shittales for statue. these great instructors will not even allow their students to do anything but look the other way, and that is not from insecurities,but form RESPECT. with out it you are nothing

This thread has turned out to be really civil without the whining, that is great. I think Joe Lewis Fighting system is sound. I think that The FMA's as well as other systems had similar concepts that Bruce taught.

But in the USA it was not widespread knowledge. I started in Kajukenbo in 1973 in the Crazy Dragon School of self Defense in the Irvington district of Fremont, Ca. and if you do the research you will find that we were the "renegades" of that time.

And I stand by "what I experienced," none of the schools back then taught like Bruce did. I know my Sifus father was Bruces student in the '60's.

But we can't compare those days with today. For instance, since Joe used K1 as an example. I've seen some of Joes fights. He did not compare to the K1 fighters and a fighter like Cung Le, could be disastrous to ones carreer.

We've evolved so much that we don't need to dwell on yesteryear. Just make sure that we continue to do "our" part by continuing the evolution.

forget ten years down the road, the gracie bashing has already began. there dominace is failing, and gjj losing ground on more evolved fighters. the sub game can't handle a striker who knows the g-n-p.


a side note, i always felt that jkd was a product of lee's un finished wc training. i think with the finished training and the experience that comes with it bruce might have never left the art.

it's absolutely inhumane to think in that way as a Bruce's friend. I think he 's truely fake!( Robert Lee-bruce's brother admit that they have falling out) I don't believe Bruce had not fought with Joe when he was alive. It's Bruce attitude in practice. Nearly impossible to practice several years without fight at all. And remember " Chuck Norris win Joe Lewis in 1967. Chuck Norris- also an expert in karrate and fighting, has a much higher estimation toward Bruce's ability. If there are anyone else in well-developed country reach the same standard as Bruce, he should be famous i think.

Why is that inhumane, to show concern for his family??? They were not best friends, you could argue the level of friendship they had becuase they were really friends through MA eventhough they apparently spent alot of time togerther it was only about the MA. u could be right, and i know i am a bit bias against him.
but if u think about that's the initial reaction, that's very strange. For any of my friend, if any one get tragedy, i will first think of losing my friend. But maybe, after a minutes, i will consider about his family and other friends. This is my attitude, i think hard to understand people think with that reaction. Sorry, i just can't understand. And i know i am over reactive.

I do see your point. it just seemed to me from teh language in the article that they were not close thought they did a lot tegether. But is was only becuase the their obsession with MA. An example could be if you had a college project you an one othe rperson in the class it required for one semester that you had to meet on average for at least 2-3 hour 3-4 times a day to get a good grade. And you both were obssessed about grades and this was your major. During the semester you may even hang out becuse you spend a lot of time with each other but you may introduce to your real friends as "oh this is joe the one I have the science project with" so you are ligitamately cool but not really friends. after the semetsre if you see each other you se each other y'know. I think that was the relationship of Lee and Lewis...I could be wrong.. But I agree if it were a true friend I would think about them first then family or whatever

Yes, their relationship were so weak. But what do i dislike about Joe's talk is that he try to say something bad for a death people. It's very foolish. However, he can't delay the good point of Bruce.
it seems that I am in favour of Bruce. But in fact, i am not really his fan. I just believe he is a real legend. According to many peopls's description of his ability. This is no reason that many people say the same things (even many good martial artists), if he is just as good as a champ boxer.

Here we go again: I trained with Joe Lewis in the mid/late 1960's while he was training with Bruce Lee, and i was at one of the most famous seminars ever, a two day seminar At the Tracy's karate school in north Hollywood, where Joe first introduced is 26 principles list that was shown earlier in this thread, first, Joe gave Bruce credit for all that Bruce showed him, as the thing that Bruce did best and what made him a special teacher, was the ability to conceptualize how to make things work, anyone can say hit hard, BUT Bruce could tell you how, a skill that Joe also has. that said, none of the things taught by Bruce were invented by him, they were already taught by others, Bruce and Joe took these principals combined them to make a coherent system of improving one's fighting ability. unfortunately this does not help my writing, so as Jim Rome says. I'M OUT.

i heard joe lewis likes to take his top instructors that work for him, pull him into his office, yell at them, tell them they're worthless and then spit on their hand.



so i'm sure that's what he meant by giving "inner self assurance" or becoming a "brilliant instructor."

It's also interesting that the personalities of Chuck and Joe are so very different. Given the way things seem in the world of show biz, you'd think Joe was the successful actor with many film and tv roles to his credit. I guess that's one of the reasons I like Chuck so much. I'll bet that's one of the reasons why Bruce liked him too.

I recently met with a well known instructor with several videos and books to his credit. He had produced an interesting program and I wanted to learn it directly from him. Our meeting lasted about 15 minutes. I drove home after the meeting feeling so relieved that I didn't waste my time with this guy. He knows a lot and seems to be very skilled. I just couldn't take his self-important attitude. His overall demeanor was weak, to say the least.

In contrast, I met Chuck Norris a few years back. I'm no one special indeed. But when I told Chuck that I taught little JKD, he smiled wide and engaged me in a 20 minute conversation. What reason did he have to do this? None that I can think of, except he is just a really nice guy.
