one inch punch only works if you hit your opponents center, if he isn't moving, and if you aren't wearing boxing gloves.

There really isn't a comparison to a boxer's jab. They are completely different things.
I think the 1 inch punch is cool, but it's a parlor trick, not a combat applicable tool.
"Ray, when someone asks you if you're a god, you say YES!"
well i think what bruce and most effective martial artists are trying to get you to see in that one inch punch is that the body mechanics are the same...
to punch effectively regardless of style one should have the ability to connect the entire human body...
basically there are muscles in the body designed to work together, but as we grow older into adulthood we start using our body as in separate pieces....
but if you can train and fine tune your micro mechanics and be in touch with yourself and your body and practice a coordinated effort from toe to fist then you'll have much greater power...
that 1 inch punch just demonstrates the power that can come from simple yet complex alignment. like anything else you just have to practice it...
when you're back in the boxing ring the same principles still hold true but due to the nature of the arena it takes a LOT more practice to be able to stay connected throughout the body while fighting....
hope that helped,

If I learn 1inch punch will it help me w boxin?![]()
I don't think a 0ne-inch punch is going to knock someone out unless they fly against a brick wall....
It is simply a demonstration of the principle that you do not need to draw back in order to strike with power. You do not use it as a technique, you apply the concept to your style of fighting. Example: Your hand is at your opponent's elbow. You do not need to draw your right hand back to your temple before planting on your opponents jaw. You simply align the body correctly and take the shortest route.
As mentioned earlier, the 1 inch punch is a demonstration of the mechanics. No magic, no secrets, nothing special or particularly impressive. Simply the concept of being as direct as possible with as much power as possible.
I wouldn't dwell on it too long. Try throwing your jab from various starting points (tight guard, lead hand well forward, high, low etc.) and you will get the idea.

Just to clarify (not argue) the one inch punch is from wing chun. Lee of course studied wingchun and was using wing chun when he went to MA demos, then incorporated into his JKD.
And just as Kiwi said it shows the power of the style. Somewhat analgus to breaking technies in karate

hEmPY : in order to lear the punch you would have to study the style and not everyone can effectively pull it off. But western boxing is different from chinese boxing. Certaing learning centerline priciple would help with boxing

isnt a jab the oposite of a inch punch?
A one inch punch could be useful in a selfdefence context. For example if you happen to have your hand up in front of you to keep someone away, then you can hit them instantly...it wont knock them down but it will give you a moment to do something else.
Done properly a one inch punch can cause alot of damage but it is very specific in its aplication, obviously.

if you combined a jab with a one inch punch, wouldnt you have a kungfu punch?
