I got a phone call from Hawkins Cheung tonight. He is in Honolulu for 2 days, and called to say hello. I picked him up and we went to dinner, and discussed Wing Chun, JKD, and other martial arts. (Hawkins learned Wing Chun at the same time Bruce Lee did under Yip Man.) We talked for 2 hours, and some very interesting points came up. 1- He doesn't like the classical Wing Chun straight blast!!!!! He punches more like we do, with body behind the blow. 2- I asked him about trapping in combination. Hawkins said "That is B.S."!!!! He said that you have to learn individual techniques, develop them until you can be confident in them, then use feeling and flow when you have to fight.
All in all, we had a great time, re-kindling an old friendship. There was much more, but it would take too much time. Suffice it to say that I respect Hawkins' attitude of working hard, testing your techniques (he has fought a lot) and being willing to change. I hope you all get to meet him someday. p.s. He has a 4-part article coming out that is probably going to criticize most JKD practitioners. He is against adding flash and elaborate techniques just for the sake of adding. Should be interesting!!!

I have just started in JKD training but all is there..... i notice the way i sit down for the past 3 years and i now realize it is jkd for sitting down....with my left arm against my left ribs and covering the groin and the other arm also along my ribs with my hand on my leg, usually sitting my loosened fist on my leg, and both my feet are on the balls and im constantly shifting my weight between the two, ready to jump in with spring action any minute......i will be a master soon.....if you could e-mail me at darkbol8483@aol.com if you are having the same sensations. this is a taste on what i have learned from JKD ~~
