Question

Hello,

I'm interessted in hearing about how the different instructors in JKDU train their sparring for the street.
Do you just kickbox ? Do you use "situation sparring" like what Tony Blauer uses ? Do you start sparring from very close range ? From a position when someone is pushing you ? and so on.

Hope to hear all about it !

Thanks, Michael.

We should be sparring in many types of situations! Try starting sitting behind the wheel of your car with the window down. Have your opponent outside, and start there. (Just be sure the car is off and the parking break is on!) I am going to start a drill where we train with the helmets and gloves on, doing focus mitts and the like. At any time, someone from another group is going to attack you and you have to just take care of business! (The instructor tells one student that he will attack another whenever he feels like it.) Spar in ALL situations! (Any naked sparring should be done at home, and please don't send me a video of it!)

Fist

a useful tip when training for street style is to have three students in the fighting area and use spontanious attack and flow defence. alternate from instructor to student attack as this will enhance the reality.

Thanks for the input. When we do "spontaneous" drills, we usually have the whole class walking around. Anyone can attack anyone at anytime. Total spontaneity! It is really fun too. Aloha!

We do a similar drill at my location. I will arbitrarily arm some students unbeknownst to the rest of the class and they will have the option to respond to attacks with a weapon or initiate them. Or they can simply choose to ignore the weapon and deal with the threat empty-hand, but it's always interesting to see the differences in people's choices when they know they're armed. It's especially interesting if they don't think anyone else is aware that they're armed...

PS:
Sorry in advance if I'm invading a sacred place, here. There was no password or anything, and I figured this area would be a good place to find intelligent conversation without trolls. I will not post here if I'm causing a problem.

That is a great way to keep things "alive". Feel free to post here, and at the JKDUnlimited.com forum. Aloha!

Hi guys,

I am not a JKDU practitioner, but would like to ask a humble question.

I wanted to know if you guys practice tough-man style rounds to keep the action high and the contact up for 1:00? I don't know if this is helpfull for street fighting, but the basic idea is that you go all out for 1:00 which is probably longer than most streetfights but has enough contact and action to replicate one and a chance to test your skills with limited time.

Thanks.

This type of training remains in our FMA portion of our curriculum at my gym. The reason being, we don’t know if the opponent has a weapon. In addition most systems that do “sparring” do so with gloves and protection on. As I have always said, unless it is winter time, don’t expect to have gloves on. Because of this we train to keep our hands safe, not broken, and able to control/draw a weapon. We do so by avoiding most closed fist strikes such as thpse used in Western Boxing. In addition, kicks are limited because of the variability of the surface we may be on in a “street fight.” So in short, nothing like kickboxing.

there has been alot of good training going on i see,

i like always training with realistic methods, me and my 2 training partners just made 3 training weapons, simlar to bokens but more practical, we sawed the heads off 3 golf clubs, wraped and tied layers of heavy material around it, then secured it all, they were wieghted nicely also could be used fully without serious damage while doing full contact weapons sparing, 1 on 1, 2 on 1, free for all, scenario training, one armed 2 unnarmed etc, they do hurt if you get hit in the face with them though,

we customise alot of weapons so they are practical to train with, without killing each other, but not softening the training so it is unrealistic. we cross train in many styles, and bring them all to the table when sparring armed or unnarmed, i must say full contact weapons sparring is really fun, and very productive at the same time, we all train seperately t different places, and all train together aswell and teach each other what we learn on our own, we dont go anywhere fancy to train, just on a big patch of grass over the back of our blocks,

i like this thread it has alot of good realistic training methods and advice,

peace,

Excellent. Get together and see what really works under full resistance. That is the way to train. Aloha!

How about a FLOOR-TO-CEILING ball!
