Hello everyone,
of course Sifu can answer as well LOL! I have a question. What is the schedule at the school? Are classes split up according to rank (level)how many classes a week etc. Do all levels train at the same time? How much time is spent on drills VS sparring in each of the levels? Thank you for any help. -Rick

Hi Rick,
The classes depend a great deal on the individuals in the class. We usually warm up with shadow boxing, do a few partner drills with kicking and punching, then into focus mitts. The level of resistance on focus mitts varies from class to class, and due to the individuals. We ALWAYS have the feeder at least throw back punches, but we take it all the way to having both trainer and trainee put on helmets and really go for it. Some nights we spar with the helmets, some nights we spar without helmets (slaps or touches), and some nights we don't spar. Same on the ground and in clinch range. Now we almost always add very light striking, even in drilling, but again the level of resistance depends upon the goals of the student and their level. Enjoy your training! p.s. Hawaii students please add your comments.

Thank you Burton,
So you have mixed classes? Different phases mixed in one class? With the "topic" drawn from any of the phases? Thanks again! -Rick

Rick,
We mix our classes, the highest ranked we have are only Phase 4. The more advanced students work the same things, but when we work together we may take the drill further/add more resistance, etc. Topics seem to be drawn from the different phases as they relate to what is being trained. |

Done with partner (glove drills) Done on mitts Done both leads (more advanced guys put on Macho cage so we can really go getem'with gloves or mitts) Salute done in the following manner: Catch jab, cover cross, salute wide cross or hook. Depending on experience, we can: Intercept Hit w/salute for gaurd Hit&salute together Salute then hit (advanced guys follow with blast) Done with mitts and or gloves with control or macho mask "clinch" 1. Striking: Down elbow. Done on mitts or thai pads 1. basic form 2. Use in corner drill W/cage 2.Grappling/Takedowns/Throws Pommuling for under hook-head throw-knee on belly, strike or arm bar option Work penetration step to single leg mechanics. "Ground" All phase one ground done freeflow agains shield and or mitts. Feeder working to get side control/knee on belly. Advanced guys: guy on bottom and top with Macho Cage. Standing guy works to pass open gaurd with strikes. guy on bottom works rocking chair, kick/standup and kick to face (gental :-) Mount escape with striking. Working timing of upa to situp clinch, to smother the strikes, more experienced guys then work for bridge&roll "sticks&Knife" Work astrisk hand sparring (stick) Bow out As we all progress, I plan to split up classes as such: Phase 1&2 Phase 3&4 etc. And mixed. We'll see if that changes when I get that far LOL! We also have a submission grappling class where we concentrate on the ground game including strikes They last an hour. Most people stay for at least half of that class. Well, and advice where I can improve on this? Thank you, -Rick

Looks good to me Rick. Keep working and experimenting. When you find a new drill that works well, let us know so we can all use it!

![]() Speaking of drills, we have actually been doing e new one that seems to be working well. In my personal opinion, in a real fight, unless you are getting beat up standing, I don't think it's a good idea to go to the ground. (as a general rule...) SO having said that, I think the push away-sprawl and underhook are VERY important to train. In addition, open gaurd with kicking and hooking/takedowns to GET BACK UP! So, I have been really stressing that. One drill I came up with is this: One guy in open gaurd with cage lays down on his back in the middle of a circle of partners. they stand around him like a clock. Some of the standing guys have shin gaurds, some have shilds some mitts and some Macho cage. I say GO! and one of the guys HEY! and the man on bottom has to rocking chair to the person who yelled. If that person is behind him, then he crosses his legs and rolls back to get him. When the person yells hey! He starts to do his attack, which differs depending on the gear he is wearing. The guys with the shin gaurds and cage, try to pass to get side while striking. The guys with mitts and shield set for kicks. What makes this drill hard, is that normally, when you are doing this with one on one, it is not so hard to spin to face the guy when he runs around you. But this way, they are already beside or behind you. It is much faster and gives you the feel of multipal opponants. your abs will be on fire! LOL! (at least mine were LOL!) Well, I hope that my be of help to someone ![]() Thanks again Sifu, and I too would be happy to hear from any of you regarding new and interesting training methods. BFN, -Rick
