I'm having difficulty finishing the triangle when rolling with strong partners who turn to the side and pass my legs. Here's the scenario...
I have his head and his right arm in the triangle, locked up or almost locked up. My right thigh is against the left side of his neck. I have broken down his posture somewhat, but he still has enough strength to turn hard to his right, pressuring down against the back of my right leg. If he is strong, he will often break my hold and pass around my legs right into sidebody. What are some things I can do to counter this move? Do I simply need to apply the hold faster? It doesn't seem like that should be the answer, as I've seen many guys simply slap on a basic scissor hold around the head and arm, then slowly work, slowly adjust to get the triangle, never seeming to be in danger of having their guard passed. Thanks for the help! Jeff

Well, thanks to the Baret Yoshida tape I just bought at Burton's seminar in Richmond, I may have found the answer to my own question. Baret shows a technique for recovering the guard or going into a triangle when your opponent is passing your guard with both arms under. It works really well once you get the foot/leg movement down...and it also works whenever someone is passing your legs to counter the triangle! It didn't work flawlessly everytime, of course, but I tried it out last night, and it definitely made it much harder for people to pass my guard, as well as open up opportunities for triangles and armlocks. Thanks to Burton for showing this stuff at the last seminar, and for recommending the tape, it's really going to help.
