The Softer Side By MJS - Tue, 01 Jan 2008 20:20:02 GMT

=========

Street effective, brutal, deadly, overkill. Those are a few words that often come to mind when we talk about Kenpo and Kajukenbo. If we look at any number of the techniques, we see some effective moves, as well as some very destructive ones.

Many times, when discussing techniques the 'legal' side usually comes up, especially when we're talking about eye shots, breaking things, and all of the other things that come with the Kenpo package.

So..what is your take on the techniques and how they're applied? Do you make any changes to take out some of the more destructive things and substitue them with something that won't cause as much damage? Now, I'm not talking about totally reworking a move, I'm simply saying that instead of an eye jab, changing that to a palm strike, if the eye jab is warrranted. Usually in the SL4 discussions, it seems like certain things have been changed or are different, giving it a less lethal flavor to it.

As practitioners of the martial arts we have to be able to control what we do. We cant think we know a lot, but we must understand that what we do know can be lethal and as you said we are all answerable to the law. When applying this to self defence my suggestion is to make the way you that you defend yourself hidden? In other words make it look like you are doing nothing at all, this way you dont have to worry about thinking in a fight ''oh i cant do that cus i might get in trouble for it'' thinking takes time and is the difference between walking away and not walking at all. The only way of doing this however involves a few things, relaxing and having a solid grounding in the basics of whatever Budo you learn. Ways of doing this for example would be ............. say your attacker comes at you with a punch you respond by not blocking in an obvious way but more ducking slightly and covering the punch lightly, to anyone eles it looks as though you are cowering in fear, you then could pretend that you have been hit adding play acting as you go giving your attacker the impression he has got you when really missed you by inches, after this fall in to them in 'pain' adding stikes as you go but keepin them hidden from view from others and the attacker, start attacking pressure points, add locks do whatever is nessasary to delay the attacker long enough so that you can blend into the crowed and escape. Its about surviving not winning so you dont have to worry about the softer side, do what you need to and nothing more.
