Actually Thai Bri patterns can help you fight better! If done full power they can help get you into shape and tone muscle, that at the least can aid in a fight situation. Better to be in shape than out of breath and too weak to fight or flee!
I joke but they really can be a good workout, I weight train and try to stay in shape but the occasional time I go to a patterns seminar (which for me is like going to the dentist for a root canal) I am so sore the next day I can barely move, good toning workout. As for patterns competition, it's just a competitve format to see who looks good doing it, not how good they are at combat or martial arts in general... probably why I always sparred at tournaments and never did patterns....but if you watch the world champion pattern winners they look really good, they get my respect for being so good at something that I am not and for all the practice and training they did to become world champion at something. The old "they can get you into shape" argument is invalid. So can hopping around in a Bugs Bunny suit, and at least it won't be training your body to throw martial arts techniques incorrectly.
I also don't mind people doing Kata. Its when they start to pretend it gives mysterious and relevant fighting training that it irks me. So I blast 'em. |

Its working its working! I can feel it!
In fact, I can now testify to its spiritual benefits. Oh yes! Its making me a better person! AND I feel a bit enlightened! I do! I really do! Great for visualisation too! Its BRILLIANT! I can well see how this has imporoved my martial akills no end. I am going to enter a Kata Tournament TODAY! I just hope no one pulls a face at me, or all this mysterious serenity will go out of the window and it'll put me off. AAAAAY MACERENA! |
