Osopardo - I have no problem with you trying to appear educated and sensitive. In fact, it is rather funny.

But please don't tell people that Kata's will help people fight. You might even get sued.

I'm sorry I never saw this post until today, I never said it would help with fighting, that was an assumption you made.

BTW - "Durrrr Brain"?
Which 8 year old taught you that?

Adam.

The eight year olds won't speak to me. They say I'm not cool enough.

Do they speak to you? You can all be TKD Black Belts together.

Actually Thai Bri patterns can help you fight better! If done full power they can help get you into shape and tone muscle, that at the least can aid in a fight situation. Better to be in shape than out of breath and too weak to fight or flee!

I joke but they really can be a good workout, I weight train and try to stay in shape but the occasional time I go to a patterns seminar (which for me is like going to the dentist for a root canal) I am so sore the next day I can barely move, good toning workout.

As for patterns competition, it's just a competitve format to see who looks good doing it, not how good they are at combat or martial arts in general... probably why I always sparred at tournaments and never did patterns....but if you watch the world champion pattern winners they look really good, they get my respect for being so good at something that I am not and for all the practice and training they did to become world champion at something. Too bad TKD doesn't pay the winners like Karate does!

The old "they can get you into shape" argument is invalid. So can hopping around in a Bugs Bunny suit, and at least it won't be training your body to throw martial arts techniques incorrectly.

I also don't mind people doing Kata. Its when they start to pretend it gives mysterious and relevant fighting training that it irks me.

So I blast 'em.

Nah hopping around in a bugs bunny suit wouldn't give me the same kind of workout at all, it might get me raped by Elmer Fudd though....

Thai Bri, just above is my initial posting in its original and uncensored form.
Exactly which part of it do you interpret as me saying it helps with fighting?

By the way.....Road Runner would have kicked Bugs Bunnys ass.

Default Patterns VS Fighting

Thai Bri.

You stated that it "irks" you when people pretend patterns/kata give you fighting training, I never once did this so what point are you making exactly?

Mind you, you won't answer this, you only answer the questions it suits you to do so.

Adam.

Thai Bri, your aversion to katas is prolly due to an innate inability to dance, you prolly got no got no got no RYTHM. Got no, got no, got no grace. Dont worry dude - I can help.

Stand in the center of the floor in a natural stance, feet shoulder width apart, hands at your side, ready?

Its working its working! I can feel it!

In fact, I can now testify to its spiritual benefits. Oh yes! Its making me a better person! AND I feel a bit enlightened! I do! I really do! Great for visualisation too! Its BRILLIANT!

I can well see how this has imporoved my martial akills no end. I am going to enter a Kata Tournament TODAY! I just hope no one pulls a face at me, or all this mysterious serenity will go out of the window and it'll put me off.

AAAAAY MACERENA!
