Recently a group of my martial art friends and foes where debating this point:
What is the martial value of traditional Jap/Oki martial arts? The martial value in debate is self-defense in today. Do we need to change the art that we practice to conform today’s martial standard of effectiveness –or- reexamine the value of what we have and immerse our selves further in our art? My group of MA friends are an eclectic group ranging from traditional Jap/Oki/Korean –to- American Kempo –to- one that has alter his traditional TKD to meet the self defense need of today. The debate has been lively and not really surprising. From the above listed grouping we all can conclude what their answers are. So I will ask you all what is your response and then throw it into the mix during our next get together. I thank you for your response. Ed Barton |
