TKD has been a mixture of native Krn and Jap arts, particularly Shotokan, and I believe it works out the way it is being Koreanized. It was to defend Korea from being taken over AGAIN and not be a push over, especially after the fall of the Confucian Government. A lot of suspicion that Japan might try again was another reason, probably, for all this mix up.
After all, Japan did steal Korean's culture for that past 500 years since Wajo Wars... just take a look at the fine pottery Japan made since 1597.

Default Dear All

Dear All,

Which TKD are you refering to?

Tae Kwon Do was a Korean name for Karate as was taught using the Pyong Ahn hyungs...

Taekwon-Do was a Korean re-evaluation of Shotokan, Shorin Ryu, and TaeKyon...Gen. Choi and Nam Tae Hi created this to be a combat art. Thus I would deam it Military!

Personally, I see many similarities in the formation of Jigoro Kano's Judo and Gen. Choi's Taekwon-Do.

Daito-Ryu Jui-Jutsu, fighting Judo, Sport Judo...Kano

Shotokan + Tae Kyon, Oh Do Kwan Taekwon-Do, Sport TKD

TAEKWON!

The Question is which TKD.

If we look at the MDk School’s they have a extremely strong Shotokan influence.

If we look at the other original TKD’s we see some Shotokan and Shorinryu influence.

If we look at the ITF we see some Shotokan with TaeKyon.

If we look at WTF we see a sports model with its attempt to be totally unique –
non -Japanese Karate influenced.

If we look at the ATA we see a franchised with it’s own expression of it’s brand of TKD.

If we look at Jhoon Rhee we see an Americanize TKD.

It does depend on the Style of TKD.

TKD is a heading of a group of individual styles – as is Karate – as is Aikido.

Personally, I enjoy going to independent Dojangs to see they’re taught / expression of what TKD is to them.

It is good to know where your TKD came from – It is also extremely important to know where your TKD is going so you can guide it, to improve upon it and pass it on to the next generation.

This is our responsibility as TKD practioners, regardless of style or organization.
