I am curious if anyone has ever had your training come in handy in a real world situation.
Like: have you ever been in a bar fight? Attacked on the street? Anywhere? What happend? What did you do? ![]() |

Inadvertantly cut some guy off in traffic. I didn't see him but I heard the anger in his car horn and the foul gestures in my rear view mirror. I figured, oh well, just leave it behind...
A few blocks later I stopped at a red light and saw him, two cars behind me, get out of his car and come striding towards me. I stepped out of my car and squared off to face him as he delivered a stream of obcenities and threats at me. His face was red, his fists were clenched tightly. He was ready. When he was close enough, I spoke up and said; "Gee, I'm sorry! I didn't even see you until it was too late. Are you ok?" "Am I ok?!? You asshole! You coulda gotten me killed!!" "Yes, I know. I made a terrible mistake. I'm sorry" Confusion and consternation crossed his face, unprepared for my response. His shoulders slumped slightly, he seemed to wilt. He threw up a hand as if to say "Whatever!" and just managed to utter; "Alright, then!" and then he walked back to his car. He seemed satified and yet a bit ashamed. I pwned!

I did the same thing. (I think) I drive a Miata and I'm quick so I guess a lot of people get really angry at me easily, but I drive very safely. I heard the anger on the freeway with this guys engine - big old huge car.
He pulls ahead of me yelling like a crazy man as he drives by - probably could have wrecked his engine in the process. I'm thinking - what is this guy thinking? I'm faster than he is and I'm going to go ahead of him anyway cause he doesn't drive fast. So he's up there and I pull up to the lane on the left of him. This proabably wasn't a good idea but I had to figure out what the hell I did? I couldn't figure it out except that maybe I cut him off somewhere? Were on the freeway on a beautiful saturday morning - hardly anyone on the road. I look over as i pull up along side him and the first thing he tries to do is spit on my car (going 70 mph! and hits his own car of course. I say "Hey man I'm sorry man? It's cool" then i just speed off and leave him be. He wasn't ready for that - hopefully he'll do some soul searching? Thats my story - but i OSP you don't sound like you were the least bit scared. You may have been in Akido Zen land or something but - what if he threw a punch? You could have dodged it like Miagi ? |

He did what he practiced. It is about avoiding the confrontation (even though yes hes deserves to get the shit kicked out of him). The movie Karate Kid 1, 2 and 3 are old but accurate. They portray a great statement about fighting. When to fight when not to fight. As cheesy as the movie may seem today it was very profound.
I do hate it sometimes when I encounter some asshole that needs to get the shit beat out of him and I have to hold in my anger. Maybe this is why I need to take Akido or something. Some kind of meditation. Especially when you are driving and get to an encounter with some idiot - it is amaizing how many people can't take it and resort to rage. It is about swollowing your pride. I have had toswollow my pride many times when someone cuts me off or something. I have done it so much that I think I have figured out how to "not" have to anger myself by needing to swollow my pride and not resort to rage. I don't know if this makes any sense. But what it sounds like he did was avoid a fight at all costs. I have been in a lot of smaller high school and even middle school fights. I don't care what anyone says in this forum. A martial skill is used to fight TKD, Kempo - whatever. It DOES work. Everyone has their own style so some may not work for others. This is my opinion. I think everyone should develope there own style. TKD styles help you get the basics down and the eliments well - the rest is up to you. I hate fights. If I ever get into a real fight I want it to be a "need to engage in" situation. I don't wanna deal with the bastard. If I get attacked I want to defend myself to the death if I have to. Take a broom stick and wack the idiot to let him know I don't "fight - if you get my drift. It is amaizing today how many grown adults just want to get out and fight - we live in really violent country (Speaking for USA here). So many assholes everywhere. |

It is mushy however - effective in a really interesting way. Makes the other person feel stupid yet you never know if they learned something from the experience.
Those type of people think everyone out to get them or else they just had a bad day at the office - who knows. All I know is - in todays world if you can smile in the face of danger like Segal does in his movies -you have a rare gift! Last edited by movingshadow; 09-25-2004 at 04:20 PM. Reason: no reason |

Outwardly I appeared calm, concerned, apologetic. I conciously tried to present a non-threatening posture. I looked like fighting was the furthest thing from my mind. The minute he was out of his car though, I got out of mine (mobility) and started assessing him (size, muscularity, demeanor, whether armed or not, etc.) Inside, I'm tensed, wound up tighter than a steel coil spring. My rectum is clenched. The adrenaline is pumping. I'm assessing what my best first shot could be, what level of force will I have to use to win. I am fully prepared to get physical if it becomes necessary. Scared? hah! I was terrified!

I don't know were you in traffic? Or did you have some open space? I can think of a lot of things based on where I am. If its on the street and attacked its fight to kill, run, avoid at all costs if needed or just do what I gotta do.
Your standing by your car time is so your just getting out of the car as he approaches you so he thinks hes got you pined in your car - (not out and standing yet) and push that freekin door into em. Hard as you can get out and put your food on his throat if he falls and say dont move or ill step. - End it quick thats how I see it ![]() |
