Mabey we do it different in Canada but the first two moves I learned in Graeco Roman Wrestling were the Double Leg Takedown and the Single Leg Takedown; you can't strike in GRW but you can attack the legs if you can get past the sprawl.

And Zhorner it was DEFINATELY GRW; not "folk wrestling".

There are hundreds more, but hopefully this will put the issue to bed. The simple fact is, Greco-Roman wrestling is an upper-body form of wrestling in which the rules specifically prohibit any holds below the waist, and specifically prohibit the use of the legs in obtaining a fall.

In other words, if you're doing true Greco-Roman wrestling, you aren't learning double-leg takedowns or single leg takedowns. They're illegal in the sport. Your coach may be teaching you elements of freestyle or folk-style wrestling, but those techniques are not, were not, and never will be part of the Greco-Roman curriculum.

PS: this is a great site for some info on how to execute various techniques. Just thought I'd share.

Yes, but Muay Thai has thousands of years of history as a fighting art outside of the ring, and western boxing has almost 300 years. Not to say that new arts suck or anything, but rumor has it that TKD is basically gimped out shotokan. It has also been proven that it does not go back thousands of years, and that flying kicks weren't used to knock off mounted horseman (lol).

i just caught this.

MMA barely goes back 10 years?????

vale tudo, (anything goes), has been going on in brazil for longer than that.

ALSO......pankration was done in ancient greece an an olympic event thousands of years ago.................combo of wrestling and boxing.

to conclude. you are a potato, and mixed martial arts goes back a lot longer than 10 years.

zhorner,

I haven't been on here for a while, so I forgot that you're a dufus... Mixed Martial Arts as we know it today (e.g. Pride, UFC, NHB related events) isn't the same as the ancient Greek Pankration. No one knows for sure what the Greeks actually practiced... We only know theories.

If you actually had half the brain you were given, you'd understand that my point was addressing MMA as it is recognized presently. The point remains that Muay Thai is a sport, Boxing is a sport, and so is TKD... The fact is people in these sports are more athletic, skilled and better fighters than most folks who claim to be doing the "non-sport", "non-contact" version. Some guy whose been practicing traditional Muay Thai in a cave for 20 years is a wuss.

That's not true. We use greco roman in the clinch range at SBG. It is non-attribute.. it is all about technique.

Muscle ALWAYS helps, however, and Greco Roman wrestlers who compete, as a result, ARE upper body monsters..as they do anything they can to get an edge over their fellow professional athletes.., just like all professional athletes do..

i was quoting another person's post, and then responding to it, directly.

He was talking about greco, and I was talking about greco.

How is that irrelevant?
