Zhorner, its not a big deal.... but North American instructors often use the wrong terminology, but like I said its no big deal really. Kata is Japanese.... its a karate term and the Japanese and Koreans dont like each other much so to them that would be a big no no. Someone TEACHING TKD is supposed to know that but I've seen worse things said or done heh. Even in my school, my students call me SENSEI..... they are supposed to call me Sabum, but they are all Japanese and barely speak english let alone Korean and Sensei just means Teacher, which I am, so I let them do it.

Your instructor sounds like an idiot. Im sick of people claiming to practice a Korean martial art yet they still call everything in japanese. IDIOTS!! Like those schools that have Karate on their sign but its really Taekwondo or Kung Fu.
Black gis? Whatever...

I think it depends on what country you are training in. If you happen to be in Japan and teach TKD then its okay for them to speak Japanese to you, after all your their country. Its like that for any country they have a native language so they use it. But they are also suppossed to know the basic Korean terms as well.

I hate it when people ruin the purity of an art. But allowing new techniques in doesnt make something dirty.

Andrew Wa, actually I visit Japan fairly regularly these days and the TKD schools of course are taught in the native language of Japan, Japanese. But the counting and commands are in Korean and Sabum is a basic Korean TKD term and the Japanese call their instructor Sabum. I should probably fix that in my school, it's on the "to do" list. Right now I teach TKD (in Thailand) predominantly in Japanese since most of my students speak only Japanese but of course use Korean for the commands. The rest of the time I mix in English and Thai and for awhile had to throw in some french for a french student... it gets confusing!

Zhorner... that instructor has the mentality and imagination of a adolescent boy..... yeesh. Black Doboks to signify they are dirty? So silly.

LOL....Damian, that's a terrible reason to got to Thailand. The more you try to get a girlfriend, the less likely its gonna happen.

It has to come naturally and when it does, its all good.

Here are some other reasons for going to Thailand (G-rated version)

Low cost tailoring, high quality (WOO HOO!)
Thai Cuisine (UH HUH!)
Beaches (WHITE SAND, CRYSTAL BLUE WATER!!)

last but not least...

muay thai, krabi krabbong!

Nah its not a terrible reason, and I didnt mean anything naughty. Its just that I have friends in Canada that are either miserably alone or in a relationship with satans spawn and they would be much better off coming here and meeting a good girl with a good heart. Anyway, its not just the Thai cuisine that is good here, the beautiful thing about Thailand is
ALL the food is awesome and cheap. They have the best food from so many countries here. Many people come here and set up restaurants, if you eat at an Italian restaurant for example it will be some Italian dude that barely speaks english, cooking or watching over your meals, it tastes truly authentic.
Another bonus about Thailand is movie theatres, they cost only about $4 Canadian and they are nicer theatres than North America, theres never a line and when you buy your tickets you are buying and reserving your seat so no one else can take it, they let you in 2 minutes before the show starts since your seat is already bought.... I love not having to wait in line for the new STAR WARS on the 18th!

I'm Glad i live in the UK and belong to the TAGB which does its best to keep TKD purely a Korean Art everything where told to do is either told or yelled at us in Korean pending on Grade and experience, America sounds as if it's taken the art for granted and ism using it to get loads of money, pretty much like waht they've done with Muay Tai and turned it into Kickboxing which doesn't have noting on Muay Tai!!!!!!! all i can say from waht i've read i'm glad my instructer actually knows what he's doing and an Organisation that is trying to keep the art as pure to its roots as possible
