Choi said all TKDers should greet

General Choi said all TKDer's should greet each other by saying Tae Kwon! was there a salute with that? If so how does it look?

I know japanese fighters say "oos!" and pull arms to sides in in a downward motion. what do koreans do?

In Tang Soo Do. We say Tang Soo! with a salute which has right fist chambered and the left held out high.

in Kuk Sool won we say "hello" hehe, we just usually bow and shake hands, if we need to address them we just use thier korean title basically translating to 'honourable'. No really way of greeting

I was a little unclear here. We don't actually do this everytime we greet, a bow or handshake would do for that. We do the Tang Soo! salute at the end of every session as we turn to face the senior member/master.

ahhhh right i see, we have something simular to that in the creed, at the ends of lessons and beginnings we just bow to the flags and the teachers in order of thier rank.

Choi said many things, but I wouldn't take them to heart.... I can't imagine groups of grown men walking around saying "tae kwon" whenever they recognized each other...

I remember when i took kali, whenever we entered we have to bow with the our stick held between our 2 arms which have to be straight and 45 degrees, and at the end of the session we do the same thing but we say "ama" I think thats how its written :P

Yeah I dont expect people to say that every time they greet. But in the past Choi suggested it and it is a good thing to have comradare (spelling?). And in class sessions its good to create an enthusiasm for the art for the students. But how would the salute look?

And can someone explain in more detail the tang soo do salute? I dont quite understand what you mean by left hand held out high. Is it open or a fist? Is it straight up in the air by your ear or what?

both hands are made into a fist, one is held out as if punching a guy about a foot taller than you. The other is fist held like the chambered hand of a karate punch, palm up held against the ribs. After bowing to the The seniour member/master he/she then shouts hana, tul, set (korean for 1,2,3) then the class shouts Tang Soo! and does the salute.

So basically its like doing a very high karate punch.....oh and you stand up straight with your feet together.

sorry you seriously train without proper teaching? That can be highly dangerous and you don't get no where need as good technique, i train with my school and like you, with friends with other MA experience.

it wasn't in this thread but in a thread i couldn't be bothered to find, you said that you didn't practice TKD in a school and everyone who truely wants to learn TKD should quit thier school train on thier own and learn from books...

Dear Original Poster,

Taekwon-Do was first taught in mass to the 29th Infantry Division of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Army.

Accordingly, they didnt bow as many would in a civilian gym, but would rather salute the instructor just as you would a senior officer!

TAEKWON!...was a battle cry of sorts or a verbal motivational tool. This would be the same as a group of Rangers yelling "OOHaHHHH". As stated by the TangsooDo practitioner it is not so uncommon.

This carried on beyond the 29th Infantry Division and on to the Oh Do Kwan which provided instructors for the entire RoK Military for over two decades.

Modern times have carried on this tradition in a few ways. Hee Il Cho can be heard shouting TAEKWON as he bows at the end of several of the patterns on his ITF Hyungs instructional tapes, many university TKD students in RoK still respond with a salute and shout of TAEKWON as the command of Kyoung-Ye (or Kyoung Nye)~
