Default So why TKD is bashed?

It seems a lot of people join the TKD bashing bandwagon. Many of these people are idiots who are ignorant and have no TKD experience. They just do it simply because others do it.

I hate these people. When and how is TKD bashing going to stop? I know TMA is targeted in general by white street punks but TKD especially seems to be the object of much hate.

Goddamn TKD bashers...

Only one thing to do. YOU need to find the people bad-mouthing TKD and personally kick all their asses!

Better get going...

mostly because poorly trained TKD people have run their mouths too often, have jumped into the ring unprepared, and have failed to understand the realities required for competition and defense which often can be related but also different.

Go to a TKD forum hosted by a TKD group and you see CMA bashing, Karate Bashing, and BJJ bashing.

people always want to think their art is best. In reality its not. Even if an art were to be the best it would only be for a time and then others would adapt. Just like BJJ. It was the thing but others learned and adapted.

It's best to just ignore it.

Why care what people think? They do it so seldom anyway it's hardly work mentioning.

Seems to me I just read you bashing Demi's stuff. Perhaps before you come in here complaining at others you take a good look at yourself.

Also this is your first warning about racial remarks. Please refrain from remarks that may be viewed as racially offensive by others or you will be BAN!

Thanks,

I think bashers in general should literally fight to prove they're not just some shittalker driving a Maybach.

INTERNET: SERIOUS BUSINESS. As quoted from another website.

Don't let this get to you, Mr. tkd. Pretend that the bandwagon doesn't exist to begin with.

One of the best things to do is ignore the internet. The internet has a lot of crap and a lot of shittalkers. These people have no life and have to use the electronic device in their room to make friends or to get attention. Most spend more time on MMA message boards then actually training. Its crap.

And its not just white kids, I dont know why you think white people hate TKD. I am white. I am also punk. I also like streetpunk music as well as hardcore and grindcore and other stuff.
Anyway black people, latinos everyone makes fun of TKD. Its like how almost everyone listens to rap music. Everyone shops at certain stores in the mall, everyone hears a rumor that TKD is stupid and that BBJ is ultimate. So its just the trend everyone follows.

Martial systems are artificial systems anyway and its better to just follow the martial way then any one style and become a warrior. (Yes I read Living The Martial Way.)

I wasn't serious about the whole white kid thing. Just got angry...

Anyway, excessiveforce said TKD bashing seldom occurs. Unfortunately, i have to disagree. Go to bullshido.net... It's a hornet's nest of rude, arrogant punks who think they're ownage "streetfighters" (again, whatever thehell those are). A lot (NOT ALL) of them have little respect for TKD and bash other arts. They also bash pretty much anything that isn't Muay Thai, BJJ, Boxing, or Wrestling. But it seems TKD bashing has been taken to the extreme.

TKD - TKD is a good style in general - BUT the way it is practiced (in general) leaves a lot to be desired. 10yr old black belts, 1degree bb opening their own dojang, earning BB in 2 yrs etc.. TKD has become the soccer mom's after-school kiddie recreation of choice.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do, Except try to raise the standards in your training an those you know in the style

I agree, TKD could be a good style but the way it's taught leaves big holes. good TKD practioners have learned to fill the holes though.

I think those who train TKD should return to its roots, study improve and emulate what was done in the old days. Study the training regimen of the old masters.

Oh, just a few things, this is a few weak spots that TKD could shore up

1. Techniques lack power (not a problem inherent to just TKD, alot of modern MAist suffer from this)

2. Not enough emphasis on setting up techniques (again, not just a TKD problem)

3. Most TKD ers are very uncomfortable a close range and tend to turn and give their backs.

What I've learned as a TKD practitioner, is that most Tae Kwon Do schools as said before, leave a lot to be desired. A lot of it comes from greedy trainers who are so Competition oriented that they leave gigantic holes in there art which only fair well in competition. I suggest if someone is to train in TKD, research your Instructor, make sure you aren't going to a McDojang (a Dojang which is in it plainly for the money, churns out black belts like burgers)

Some warning signs for a McDojangs

1. An extreme amount of belts, in an adult class * look for something like this

White
White Black stripe
White Yellow
Yellow
Yellow Black Stripe
Yellow Orange
Orange
Orange Black Stripe
Orange Green
Green
Green Black Stripe
Green Purple

You get the idea.

2. A place that basically gives a person a blackbelt
A bad idea, and potentially life threatening, a good look at this is seeing black belts in the dojang which appear pretty much, unskillful.

3. If you're in TKD for sport only this is okay
A place which has a hands down policy

In my opinion, one of the worst things you can do is keep your hands down in self defence, its arrogant, it leaves you open for potentially fatal hits, totally stupid.

4. Bad instructors
Possibly the worst thing about an instructor at a McDojang, will let you do a form poorly, will let you keep bad habits in training, and will still pass you as long as you've got a paycheck for him. Most of the time they will say they are an extremely high dan blackbelt, but will be a 1st dan.

*Kids need more time to learn better forms, thus it makes sense to have more belts for them.

My school which I train in, we have a 6th Dan instructor(May actually be 7th)
Its possible to train 12 hours a day 6 days a week. (thats my shedule)
The only instructors besides our Master is a 3rd Dan and a 2nd Dan Blackbelt who test infront of Grandmasters.
We learn a multiple forms of Martial arts
Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Kickboxing, and Haidong Kumdo
Its easily possible to fail a test
Bad habits are broken

I've searched long and hard for a Dojang like this one, I travel the extra miles, and i'm completely happy with it. I'm not saying All TKD schools are bad, but this one is, to my knowledge one of the best.

McDojos are a large part of the problem.

Now, i strongly believe in fairness and equaility for all but here are just sometimes when it doesn't ring true. The Navy SEALs are the best of the best. there are reasons why you nanny couldn't join them even in her wildest dreams.

Personally, i feel it is an embarrassment that a 9yr old can have a balck belt after learning an art for 3yrs. A black Belt if Supposed to signify mastery, ability and skill. If a 9yr old can do that, what does that say for the rest fo the black belters? Skill can be bought? Skill just requires minimal effort and energy?(yes, i know this isn't true but its what the average joe sees)

If every fatass was allowed into the commandos, then no body would fear the commandos. Terrorists would laugh their asses off everytime the commandos said surrender or die. That because the Commandos Are supposed to be the best of the best, not the best of the rest. They have an image to uphold. If they didn't uphold thier image, then they would have the X factor that puts fear into the enemies' hearts.

20years ago, if a black belt walked the streets, you'd be thinking "Holy crap a Black belt! Better becareful cause or he'll take me out with his smallest toe." Maybe its partly due to the fact that we're beginning to realise that black belters are humans too, maybe its because we realise that learning MA doesn't make you invincible. But Maybe its because of the blatant disrespect for the black belt. Not by the outsiders, but by corporate assholes looking to make a quick buck. But its also the fault of some so called "Masters" who believe that even a 7yr old qualifies for a belt that signifies mastery and skill.
Yes, i agree that no one can every fully master an art. But the once scared black belt used to signify at least a certain level of mastery. If 9yr olds can obtain that, than that level of mastery can't be very high. If people keep handing out blackbelts like they do happy meals, then TMA's already tarnished image will be damaged beyond repair.

Don't get me wrong i have a great respect for TKD(and TMA as a whole). TKD has produced some of the fastest and best kickers out there. Not to mention that fact that their kicks are some of the most creative(a good thing if you know how to properly apply it). But theres a Huge black hole in TKD's striking capabilities. The near absolute lack of hands.(Yes, i am aware that there are some good schools out there which place a large emphasis on the hands and actually incorporate these hand techniques into their sparring, sadly these tend to be the minority). Most sparring i've seen is done with the hands at the side or guarding the chest, leaving the head dead open for a shot.
I think Olympic TKd has somewhat watered down the art by only giving points for kicks. Few if any points are given for hand techniques. This kinda leads to many schools following the practise.
I also know that some TKD Katas include the use of elbows and knees to cover the full ranges when striking. Now, if TKD were to work on those aspects and properly incorporate Hand techniques and cover all the ranges like Mt does, then it will really begin to improve the overall image of TKD. I think Olympic TKd has somewhat watered down the art by only giving points for kicks. Few if any points are given for hand techniques. This kinda leads to many schools following the practise.

Well said.. but

I too have a problem with 9 yr olds with black belts. But if he/she put in that time (3 to 4 yrs) to reach 1st dan, I don't think the child should be deprived of one. After all that hard work, it would seem rather nasty to say "No, you can't have one just because you're too young".

Age isn't an issue with me unless the blackbelts are just handed over. My dojang used to be really good but lately it's been getting watered down unfortunately
