Cause I've found that if you find proper balance, the power difference between and front leg isn't that much. And additionally, front leg is faster. But i use both equally. When I want to put the hurt on someone, I do whip out the backleg.

Acitic - good example
TKD - its no assumption. You first state that the back leg is the power, but then state that there is no difference in power between the front and back which is pretty sad. The thread screams inexperience this is a question I would expect from a white belt or maybe yellow/orange belt......but a BB The truth can only make you stronger

You need as many tech's in your armoury as possible, if all you do is kick off the back leg then thats all they are going to expect, you CAN create a lot of power from your front leg, enough to knock someone out but you will NEVER get the same amount of power as you do the back leg.

Yeah, this is the attitude I would expect from maybe one of those stereotypical BJJ juiceheads, but a TKD traditional MA guy? Life's not all about fighting and such, don't they teach you that?
And another thing...you can swing hard to bring the back leg turning kick out, but it is MUCH easier to extend far, making it a distance weapon. After that, you have the option of pushing forward to close for hand combinations, or for a tournament, clinch to prevent a counterattack. Another option is to strike Muay Thai style...sorta baseball bat strike it, follow through, and bring it back to where you were by spnning. Doing so allows for an easy back kick, back hook kick, etc. as you've already got plenty of rotational momentum. The point of the second option is that you briefly extend into range, pull back out, while the rotational momentum sets you up for a more devastating blow if they get pissed and try to charge in for their own counter. So no, the front leg isn't always better. The front leg kick can't extend quite as far, or with the same "out of the blue" factor as the back leg. Another thing, TKD isn't about being so fast that your fastest kick is lightning fast so they can't even see it coming. While it's a nice thought, it's not going to happen against a trained fighter. So you need to give some thought to set ups, feints, etc. For example, a turning kick turns into a hook kick(aka reverse snap/turning kick) very quickly, and basically switches the path it takes to the opponent's head in a split second, while it uses a very similar initial movement. |

Unfortunately I do not think he ever learned the tenets of taekwondo, and if he has never learned what they mean.
If one of my students ran his mouth on a public forum like this there would be hell to pay.

Making front leg kicks work isn't that hard and there's nothing wrong with front leg kicking. You just have to train if you want it to be effective.
Here's a drill for front leg front kicks: Get a heavy bag swinging and stand in front of it. When it's coming at you, front leg front kick it at the last possible moment. Hit it hard enough that it stops. When you can hit it hard enough it starts to swing back forcefully(not the lazy swing it makes whenever it's hit), then get it swinging farther and keep going. Eventually you'll need a heavier bag, but you'll learn to kick fast and hard with the front leg. Last edited by Whispers; 01-06-2006 at 01:41 AM. front leg can be really effective because it is less predictable. there is no long movement like if u do a rear roundhouse kick, your leg is going to have to come around your entire body, giving the other person a nice chance to block it. if u use your front leg, it is faster but may not be as powerful.

I always get scolded for not using my frontleg enough
It's out front, shorter distance and all that jazz, you can snap it quicklike, and with some efford you can throw a number of kicks, front kick being the lazy man's kick! However, if you rely on just one sort of kick you deplete your arsenal. I can thow a pretty mean back leg frontkick or roundkick (not so much my side- and hook kicks.. )Like my fav. TKD T-shirt says: If we have more than one way we can have our way more often. In other words, don't be a one trick pony!
