There is a good argument to be made that one uses TKD training for self-defense every single day. The confidence that you learn shows in your body language and the bad guys choose to attack someone else instead of you.
This fits right in with Sun Tzu: Quote:

When I was teaching my class during Bike Week two years ago, 4 Hell's Angels came in and began to harass some of my students.
I asked them to stop and they refused, wanting to challenge me. I told them that I am not a Master because I fought my way there, I am a Master because I didn't. The two became restless and I continued to talk them into leaving. Eventually they did. I have had to use TKD on SD missions for the Navy which I can't relinquish quite yet...but it was effective every time. |

Interesting...
Just today on lady told me how her granddaughter - little bit of nothing, sizewise - took care of a couple of older kids harrasing her even tinier brother...she grabbed one of them by the arm and snapped a side kick at the other...problem solved. But I suppose the major effect of it is the body posture...you don't make for an easy target... |

I ended up in a fight against a racist in school (I'm not 100% Swede, and he couldn't take that, so he attacked me)... first I got him against the wall. Then there was wrestling, and he got loose. He was trying to get around me, and then I made a couple of Pitchagi's (one low, hitting his knee and an other hitting his gutts). Then a couple of punches and then the teachers split us up. He didn't hit me one single time, and I was way too fast for him. I would say this was a success in self defense.

If you compete in WTF style Black Belt competition, you will fully understand how effective proper kicking can be. If you don't, you will never know. All your knowledge will be based on the theories and fantasies of others. Just like the one you read here.

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it till I die. There IS a difference between tae kwon do the sport and tae kwon do the art.
In self defense it doesn't matter what style or system you use, your main mission in a self defense situation is to get out of it alive... period!!!

TKD for self-defense looks alot like karate, except that TKD practitioners can kick high, hard and cold with greater ease then most karateka.
There's alot of open handed strikes to the vital areas too.

2. there are 17 different types of sparring in Taekwondo, only 1 type is used for WTF style competition. A different one of that 17 is used in ITF 3. Forms, Sparring, Breaking, Mommakki/Hoshinsul have their own divisions at sporting events called tournaments, and all the above are martial arts practices. 4. Your attempt to divide Taekwondo into sport/art/whatever -- fails. Alcohol |

Fool. Actuallt it's only written if you practice the fake version of TKD (WTF) Proper ITF TKD is written TaeKwon-Do. That's what it's supposed to be written like. WTF have got it wrong. Tae Kwon Do is how people in TKD International write it and so that would be the correct method of writing it if you were a member of TKD International (which, for your information, is neither part of the ITF or WTF but practices the ITF style. TKD International is very big in Europe and the TAGB is the biggest TKD organisation in Britain and that is part of TKD International ... and they write it Tae Kwon Do. To summarise, the proper ITF way is TaeKwon-Do. Taekwondo and Tae Kwon Do are what other organisations use ... those who broke away from the founder and starteded doing things differently to how TKD should have been. I guess the way you write it depends on what Org you are with. |
